How to check for and repair RV slide-out failures from hydraulic ram leaks

Join me “In The RV Shop” as I explain what a hydraulic ram leak in the slide-out mechanism of an RV can look like and how it can lead to operational issues and potential damage. If you notice hydraulic fluid leaking from the ram, it’s essential to address the issue promptly to prevent further damage and ensure the proper functioning of the slide-out.

Here are the steps you can take to address a hydraulic ram leak in your RV slide-out:

Safety first

Ensure that the RV is safely parked on a level surface, and that the slide-out is fully retracted.

Disconnect the RV from any power source or shore power.

Identify the leak

Inspect the hydraulic ram and surrounding components to identify the source of the leak. Look for visible signs of hydraulic fluid, such as wet spots, drips, or puddles.

Check hydraulic fluid level

Consult your RV’s manual to locate the hydraulic fluid reservoir and check the fluid level. Low fluid levels can contribute to leaks and affect the proper operation of the slide-out.

Isolate the slide-out system

If possible, isolate the affected slide-out system by closing off the hydraulic valve leading to the leaking ram. This prevents further fluid loss and allows you to address the issue without affecting other systems.

Inspect hydraulic lines and fittings

Examine the hydraulic lines and fittings connected to the leaking ram. Tighten any loose fittings, and inspect the lines for signs of damage, such as cuts or abrasions.

Seal replacement

If the leak is coming from a damaged seal on the hydraulic ram, you may need to replace the seal. This involves disassembling the ram, removing the old seal, and installing a new one. Refer to your RV’s manual for guidance or consider seeking professional assistance.

Professional repair

If you are not comfortable or experienced with hydraulic system repairs, or if the damage is extensive, it’s advisable to seek the assistance of a professional RV service technician. They can assess the situation, identify the root cause, and perform necessary repairs or replacements.

Fluid replacement

If the hydraulic fluid has leaked, you may need to top up or replace the fluid as per the manufacturer’s specifications. Use the recommended hydraulic fluid for your RV’s system.

Test the slide-out operation

After addressing the leak, test the operation of the slide-out to ensure that the issue has been resolved. Monitor for any further leaks or abnormalities during the testing process.

Regular maintenance

Implement a regular maintenance schedule for your RV’s hydraulic systems, including the slide-out mechanism. Check for leaks, inspect seals, and perform any recommended maintenance tasks outlined in the RV manual.

Always refer to your RV’s manual for specific guidance on maintenance and repairs, and if in doubt, consult with a professional RV service technician to ensure the proper and safe resolution of hydraulic system issues.
