Stay in a trailer like Lucy and Desi’s in their movie ‘The Long, Long Trailer’

If you love the look and feel of classic RVs, the Starlite Vintage Resort in Cañon City, Colorado, might be a good addition to your bucket list. Tucked near the Royal Gorge, the resort is designed to feel like a step back into the mid-20th century, when road trips and travel with an RV were booming.

Instead of just displaying old rigs, the Starlite has carefully restored or recreated them, turning each into fully functional guest lodging, blending nostalgia with today’s creature comforts.

Lucille Ball movie trailer

There are many eye-catching trailers on the property, but one draws special attention. It’s a 1953 New Moon travel trailer called The Long, Long Trailer, after the classic Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz movie released the same year.

The film was a hit, capitalizing on the couple’s popularity from their TV show. In the movie, Ball and Arnaz play newlyweds who buy an enormous travel trailer and set out on a cross-country honeymoon. The trip quickly becomes a string of comedic mishaps—from trying to cook in a moving trailer to navigating treacherous mountain roads.

At the Starlite, you can relive the spirit of the ’50s by stepping inside a real New Moon that has been lovingly restored. The whereabouts of the actual trailer used in the film is unknown.

A big trailer for its time

The trailer itself measures 36 feet, big for its era. Inside, it has been updated just enough to make it comfortable while preserving its character. There’s a private bathroom with shower and toilet, a small but practical kitchen with refrigerator, and working heating and air conditioning.

The décor leans heavily into its 1950s roots, with fabrics, patterns, and furniture pieces that capture the look of the day. Relax outside in vintage-inspired outdoor seating.

If you’d like to visit the Starlite Vintage Resort but stay in your own RV, then choose one of the full-hookup sites. Learn more or make a reservation here.

Big honor

Oh, and by the way. Starlite Vintage Resort was named USA Today’s #1 Vintage Trailer Hotel in the nation for 2025.

Russ and Tiña went from childhood tent camping to RVing in the 1980s when the ground got too hard. They've been tutored in the ways of RVing (and RV repair) by a series of rigs, from truck campers, to a fifth-wheel, and several travel trailers. In addition to writing scores of articles on RVing topics, they've also taught college classes for folks new to RVing. They authored the book, RV Boondocking Basics.

Thank you for highlighting the campground, Russ and Tina! This seems a nice mixture. That is, if others are traveling with us, then they can stay in one of the campground’s RVs (or cabin at a different campground) overnight and rejoin us during the day, and when we depart. Thus, all have the opportunity for some personal space and time. Have a great day and safe travels!
