If you tow a camper, load up your SUV with camping gear, or use your Subaru as your adventure vehicle, there’s a new recall worth paying attention to.
Subaru has announced a recall affecting more than 541,000 SUVs in the United States. The reason? An incorrect weight rating was printed on a required certification label.
Vehicles affected
The recall covers certain 2019-2026 Subaru Ascent models, 2025-2026 Forester and Forester Hybrid models, and 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid models.
The issue involves the Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) listed on the vehicle’s certification label. (GAWR indicates the maximum amount of weight each axle can safely support.) An incorrect value could lead owners to unknowingly overload the vehicle, which increases the risk of a crash.
But weight!
For RVers, weight ratings aren’t just numbers on a sticker. Many travelers pack coolers, generators, bikes, kayaks, and other camping essentials before hitting the road. Some Subaru owners also tow lightweight teardrop trailers or small utility trailers. Exceeding an axle’s weight limit can negatively affect braking, handling, tire wear, and suspension performance. This is especially true during long road trips or mountain driving.
Not mechanical
The good news is that Subaru says this recall does not involve a mechanical problem with the vehicles themselves. Instead, the company will mail owners a corrected certification label along with instructions for placing it over the original label. Owners who prefer professional assistance can have a Subaru dealer install the updated label at no cost. Subaru has not reported any crashes or injuries related to this labeling error.
What to do
If you own one of the affected models, it’s a good idea to verify whether your specific vehicle is included in the recall before your next camping trip. You can do this by entering your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on Subaru’s recall website or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s recall lookup tool or this specific page.
This recall is also a timely reminder for all RVers to pay attention to vehicle weight ratings. Whether you’re towing a small camper or simply filling the cargo area for an extended adventure, understanding your vehicle’s payload limits and axle capacities can improve safety and reduce unnecessary wear on your vehicle.
