The video below from the survivalist YouTube channel Copper Mutant (Post Apocalyptic Survival) might have an unusual presentation style, but it nonetheless gives us a good look at the Capri Camper Cowboy truck camper, a rugged rig ready for adventure. Our host, who frequently asks his viewers if they are ready for the apocalypse, says he feels more ready now that he has his Capri Camper Cowboy truck camper.
I think for the apocalypse I would have preferred a slightly larger, more amenity-filled option—but to each their own. The Capri Camper Cowboy is an unusual truck camper in that it is NOT a cabover. This helps keep it small and lightweight (about 700 pounds), but it does cut into living space.
Our host says that around town his 3.5 twin-turbocharged (aka Eco Boost) V-6 F-150 engine gets about the same mileage with or without the camper on the truck. However, he took a fuel hit to the tune of two to four mpg on steep inclines, especially when driving over 60 mph.
Capri Campers has been around for over 50 years. The Capri Camper Cowboy, with its diamond-patterned aluminum exterior, retains the vintage look the company is known for. Only they aren’t trying to look vintage, they have just been building campers this way forever.
Inside, our host was surprised at how comfortable the dense foam mattress bed was. And it’s more than six feet long!
The table/desk features a versatile design that lets it be used as a workspace or a dining table. It can also fold down to provide an additional small bed. In fact, in a pinch, 2 adults and two kids can sleep in this camper.
There is a small kitchen space with a microwave, a 2-burner stove, and a small sink. A handy popup table provides additional kitchen workspace.
The interior décor is more rustic than the average RV. Our host likes that, and so do I. It was custom-made with his choice of paneling and fabrics.
In the video, our host discusses A/C options. He chose a small window air conditioner, but a more traditional RV rooftop A/C is available. However, he wanted to keep his height low and have room for rooftop solar, so the window model better suited his needs.
More nice features of the Capri Camper Cowboy truck camper
- FanTastic vent fan
- LED lighting inside and out
- Blackout shades
- Multiple interior 110v outlets, single 12v and dual USB charging ports
- Fire extinguisher
- A/C
What’s not to like?
Our host says that because of its distinctive appearance, this is not a stealth camper. In fact, people wanting to know more about it and even wanting to see inside have constantly approached him. But if you are looking to make friends and socialize, this might be a good thing.
The camper has an interior ceiling height of only five feet. Our host says that for him, this has not presented any practical problems and he barely even notices it. However, I know for many folks this would be a make-or-break issue.
This is Capri Camper’s smallest camper and, therefore, there is no toilet or shower. (I don’t believe any Capri campers have showers, but some do have portable toilets.)
Capri Camper Cowboy truck camper specs
A lot of the specs will depend on the size of your truck bed, so rather than list them, I will refer you to this page.
The model in the video carries 10 gallons of fresh water plus two more gallons on the exterior storage racks.
Know that all models have 30-amp service. To give you a price idea, which will again depend on options, you’re looking in the neighborhood of $12K.

Thank you, Cheri! This is certainly an intriguing RV. A friend is looking for essentially a mobile hunting/fishing cabin and this may be just the thing. Perhaps lacking a shower and a toilet for a couple or three days well away from the beaten path is doable. It is pretty inexpensive too. Anyway, thank you for finding and sharing this; safe travels! 🙂
Good article..another good choice is an Alaskan camper.
