Portable propane Blackstone Griddle pros and cons

By Cheri Sicard
In the video below, the team from Travels with Delaney review a popular RV accessory, the portable propane-powered Blackstone Griddle.

Our hosts have been using the griddle, both at home and on the road, for more than three years now. When they first bought it, they were RVing in a tiny teardrop trailer, so space was definitely an issue. They used to have a small Coleman grill that proved too small, and the Blackstone replaced that.

Now that they have upgraded to a larger rig, they asked themselves, would they buy it again?

To answer that question, they first evaluated what they like and don’t like about the 17” portable Blackstone griddle.

What they especially like about the portable Blackstone griddle

  • The overall build quality is good.
  • At around $100 the price was affordable. (Side note: Prices have gone up since they bought their griddle. Today’s Amazon price is $131.)
  • It has a large cooking surface, enough space to easily cook for four people.
  • It’s versatile and works well for everything from breakfasts to steaks.
  • Even though the 17” griddle only has one burner, the center does get hotter, which works well for cooking different foods as you have two temperature zones.
  • It’s portable and packs easily away in its optional carrying case.
  • Even after years of use, the automatic lighter, which gives out on many griddles, is still going strong.
  • It’s easy to clean, as demonstrated in the video.

What they don’t like about the Blackstone griddle

Our host admits this list is short; however, there are a few things he is not so thrilled about.

  • Hot dogs—You can cook them on the griddle, but our host prefers them grilled.
  • For whatever reason, the griddle gets much hotter when hooked up to a portable disposable propane bottle than it does when hooked up to a 20 lb. propane tank. He did find that if he opens the valve very slowly, it tends to work a little better.
  • Wind—The way the griddle is constructed, high winds will push the flame around. There are after-market accessories to deal with this, or you can cover the gap with foil as in the demo in the video.

Would they buy the Blackstone griddle again?

You betcha! Our host says it has served them well and done everything it was supposed to do. Winner!!!

Order the portable Blackstone Griddle from Amazon.

The one thing i dislike about Blackstone griddles is the griddle surface can rust. I have an electric Blackstone griddle and it’s great. Bought it at Walmart. The surface is non stick and doesn’t rust. I also have another griddle, Forgot the name and it is enamel coated and doesn’t rust.

If you properly season and store it (like cast iron), that should prevent most if not all rust. Personally I like that better than nonstick surfaces.

The link to Amazon says it is currently unavailable and they have no idea when (or if) it will become available again.

Thank you for pointing that out Tommy. It was live when I wrote it and live when Emily and Diane proofed it, but Amazon changes. We updated with a new link and good news, the price is lower than when I wrote the article (Amazon prices change all the time too).

I have the same unit. It doesn’t have to be very windy to create a problem, just a constant breeze. I got a wind shield from Amazon and it solved the problem.

Thank you, Cheri! 🙂 We have friends who rave about theirs. We don’t cook so much and haven’t gotten one. Perhaps when our little Weber dies. Thanks again for the information! Safe travels! 🙂

For a griddle, I still like my 20 year old Coleman stove with my grandmother’s 100 year old cast iron skillet. And have a burner for a pot. I like the Weber for burgers and dogs. It’s just the two of us, I’ve never needed more cooking space, but I could see the Blackstone for a larger group.
