RVs make ordinary trips feel like big adventures. They add freedom, chaos, and heart to stories, whether it is a family vacation gone wrong or a wild chase with aliens.
In the video at the end of this post, Joe of RVing with Joe shares a fast, fun countdown of movies and shows where RVs steal the scene!
RVs shake up movie and television plots with tight quarters, rolling mishaps, and road trip unity. Think breakdowns, strange campgrounds, and family blowups that somehow pull people closer. Think of RVs as symbols of freedom and family bonding.
Here’s Joe’s top 10 list of best RV movies and TV shows. (I might have ordered this differently and had a few alternative picks, but hey, it’s not my list.)
10. We’re the Millers: A small-time drug dealer, played by Jason Sudeikis, builds a fake family to drive an RV across the border. The borrowed wholesomeness unravels fast. Awkward neighbor moments, sketchy stops, and forced family bonding turn the trip into a loud, silly mess. Quite a rig, indeed.
9. The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert: Two drag queens and a transgender woman cross the Australian Outback in a lavender bus named Priscilla. Big looks, raw honesty, sharp one-liners, and a stellar cast power this ride.
8. Spaceballs: Mel Brooks spoofs sci-fi with an RV in space, a Winnebago that feels like the Millennium Falcon’s offbeat cousin. The gag lands every time. Expect over-the-top chases, low-budget brilliance, and lovable scrappiness from a ship that looks ready for a campground.
7. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation: The Griswolds’ holiday implodes, and Cousin Eddie’s RV gets a few of the most memorable scenes. One black tank emptying stunt lives in comedy history. It is gross, it is bold, and it is pure Christmas Vacation energy.
6. Paul: Two friends hit the road in an RV, meet an alien named Paul, and end up on the run. The RV becomes a rolling hideout and a home. The mix of nerd jokes, heart, and sci-fi chaos keeps it breezy. Was that Klingon? He’s psychotic, nerd!
5. Breaking Bad: Walter White and Jesse Pinkman start their meth operation in a beat-up RV. The tight space adds tension, danger, and dread. That RV is a symbol of their slide into crime, and it is as iconic as the show itself.
4. Stripes: Bill Murray and Harold Ramis sign up for the Army, then chaos follows. The surprise star late in the film is an urban assault vehicle that turns military mayhem into broad comedy. It is loud, clunky, and very funny.
3. Mickey’s Trailer: Mickey, Donald, and Goofy head out with a tiny trailer and big optimism. Nature fights back, gadgets misfire, and the trailer becomes a character. Short, charming, and packed with classic Disney gags.
2. The Long, Long Trailer: Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz play newlyweds towing a shiny new trailer across the country. Joy turns to panic on steep grades and tight turns. Refrigerator, shower, bath, everything… absolutely everything. The towing problems still feel real today.
1. RV: Robin Williams leads the Monroe family on a cross-country trip in a deeply flawed RV. Every stop brings a new disaster, from family blowups to that infamous black tank scene. The laughs land, and the heart does too, as the Monroes start to like life on the road.
Honorable Mentions
- Independence Day: Civilians flee in RVs, including Randy Quaid’s family, during the alien attack. “I’ve been saying it for 10 damn years!”
- Jurassic Park: Tour vehicles and specialty rigs raise the stakes with dinosaurs on the loose.
- Zombieland: Double Tap: An RV provides shelter and a touch of luxury.
- The Walking Dead: RVs double as safety and mobility vehicles when the world falls apart.
- 2012: When the planet breaks, any vehicle that moves matters. Hold on, baby.
From messy holidays to outlaw labs to heartfelt family trips, RVs bring humor and heat to the screen. Which title would you swap in or leave out? Drop a comment below with your pick and keep the road trip going.
