Video tour: 2025 r-pod RP-153, an amazing small, rear-door travel trailer

Not every RV packs as much punch into a small package as the 2025 r-pod RP-153 from Forest River. In the video at the end of this post, we get a tour of this tiny travel trailer from Josh the RV Nerd.

For those tired of the same old layouts, this towable truck-camper-style travel trailer brings a clever blend of comfort, storage, and efficiency. Whether you’re a solo camper, hit the road with a partner, or want to haul some buddies for the weekend, this lightweight mini travel trailer is set up to impress, without sacrificing common-sense usability.

The r-pod RP-153 stands apart with its towable truck camper floor plan. Instead of mounting onto a pickup bed, this layout brings the cozy and practical feel of a classic slide-in camper to a travel trailer you can pull behind midsize trucks and many SUVs. A rear wall entry door and a compact shape make it easy to stash in tight camping spots while offering a more comfortable experience than most truck-bed campers.

The straight-in loading available from the rear entry door opens up smart options for campers with active lifestyles. Load up folding e-bikes, dog kennels, fishing totes or even a small kayak—no need for bulky toy hauler setups. This travel trailer handles the gear most campers bring.

Murphy bed/dinette

True to innovation, this camper swaps the stiff front bed for a Murphy dinette. You get a spot that can quickly shift from sleeping to lounging to dining mode. There’s flexibility for solo travelers to use a daybed, and buddies can share close quarters without sharing the same bed. Leave the bed folded away to enjoy panoramic window views up front, or pull it out for a cozy short queen sleeper.

This smart design means one, two, or even three people can camp out comfortably, all without anyone needing to climb over each other at bedtime.

The seating layout uses a convertible sofa bench rather than a typical dinette. Whether sitting for morning coffee, watching TV or crashing overnight, campers have options. The front dinette provides a private nook, and the 12V pivoting TV ensures viewing from the sofa or sleeping area. Large windows let in plenty of light, helping the small space feel open and inviting.

Kitchen in the r-pod RP-153

Despite the compact size, the kitchen setup gets a lot right:

  • Two-burner high-output stove (both burners boil water; not all RV burners do)
  • 3-in-1 air fryer, convection microwave and electric oven
  • Hardwood sink cover adds counterspace or stovetop side splash (hangs over stove)
  • Central vacuum with electric dustpan makes cleaning up a breeze
  • Multiple power and USB outlets for gadgets

The r-pod RP-153’s storage solutions get a nod for smart use of limited space:

  • Separate 12V compressor fridge and freezer
  • Tall pantry area for bulk goods (though more shelves could help)
  • Netting on seat bases for secure storage
  • Durable lumber core cabinetry, pocket-screwed for strength

Bathroom in the r-pod RP-153

Campers won’t have to sacrifice shower comfort for compactness. The enclosed bathroom includes:

  • Dedicated shower and toilet
  • Big Furrion XL vent fan for air flow
  • Towel space and surprising elbow room

This dry bath may be small but it ticks the boxes for function and privacy—a rare win in this weight class.

Comfort in the r-pod RP-153

Staying comfortable in different weather is easy with:

  • 15,000 BTU air conditioner (strong but not ducted, so loud when running)
  • Front Euro-style window that pops open for airflow
  • Built-in bug screen and a radiant backer for extra thermal regulation
  • Furrion XL vent fan to keep things moving

Outside

Outside, the r-pod RP-153 brings practical add-ons for storage and convenience:

  • Full front pass-through for big camping gear
  • Four-corner stabilizer jacks to stop wobbles
  • 8-foot-wide axle offers better road stability, though the body is about 7’6″ wide
  • Exterior hot/cold shower and propane hookup for a griddle
  • Factory solar (200W panel) plus Goodyear Endurance tires (with off-road options)
  • Ladder-prepped for roof access and maintenance
  • This model skips a rear hitch because of its unique floor plan

Awning

The awning stretches 8 feet, sized right for the trailer. While there’s no batwing wraparound awning, some owners may opt for aftermarket upgrades.

r-pod RP-153 weight specs

This RV fits a lot into a small shell:

  • 17’3″ long, 9’1″ tall, listed at 8′ wide (axle)
  • Empty weight just under 3,000 lbs., GVWR 4,524 lbs.

Quick comparison

Many midsize tow package trucks and SUVs can haul it safely:

  • Ford Maverick: 4,000 lb. max tow – not enough for this GVW
  • Typical midsize pickups: usually rated up to or above 5,000+ lbs. – a safer match

Final thoughts on the r-pod RP-153

The 2025 r-pod RP-153 stands out as a go-to for solo travelers, couples, or outdoorsy friends. Its mix of comfort, flexible sleeping, and space-saving touches makes it great for weekend fishing or extended getaways. For those who value comfort but don’t want a huge rig, this camper brings a lot to the table.

To each his own. Initially, I thought the R-pods looked great. However, none have a rear bumper. At best they have 1-1/4″ receiver for a spare tire mount. I’ll be the first to admit as a ‘bumper’ to protect a trailer, those 4″ tubes fail miserably. But as a gear carrier, they are wonderful. Not a lot of gear, and certainly not a lot of weight, but I have stuff on my (reinforced) rear bumper that I don’t want inside the trailer or my tow vehicle.

Beyond the bumper, I’ve been in too many camp sites where a rear entrance is impractical due to space or terrain.

Thank you for sharing the video, Cheri! Yes, this might make a great RV for fishing trips. Have a great day and safe travels!

A visual reference with a dinner plate around (9″) and floor length with a tape measure on your videos would be a plus.

What type of roof, pictures of the frame and thickness, insulation, what is the suspension/tires, cost? These issues are more important than a 3 way oven. Is there a heater?
