At Ann Retzlaff’s Annie’s Campground in Shawano County, Wisconsin, you better not show up wearing a mask or she’ll assume you’re a bad guy up to no good!
While masks may reduce the chances of transmission of the virus, they may increase the chances of the bad guys taking an advantage, at least that’s Rezlaff’s thinking. So if you plan on visiting her place anytime soon, be prepared to remove your mask when you show up. If you don’t, then stay somewhere else.
In an interview published on wxow.com, Retzlaff pointed to her responsibility as a campground owner. “My responsibility is to take care of my family and my property, but also I run a business so it’s my responsibility to also provide as safe of an environment as I can.”
In keeping up with that responsibility, Retzlaff says anyone entering any of the campground buildings needs to be clearly visible. That means, no face masks.
To Ann Retzlaff the matter is so serious that anyone who enters one of her buildings and refuses to remove a mask will receive a criminal’s welcome. Retzlaff says that such an incident will be treated “as a burglary in progress.” She points out that it takes law enforcement folks a good ten minutes to respond to a call for help so “there won’t be a hesitation to act on a burglary in progress.”
The story doesn’t spell out in detail just what that action will be, but given the tone of Retzlaff’s personal Facebook page, it might not be pretty – she sounds like a mighty determined woman. Retzlaff says too many area businesses have been taken advantage of by masked bad guys.
If you’re a determined face mask wearer and can overcome the idea that you’ll have to go bare-faced in the registration office, your worries are over. After you’ve been properly identified, you’re welcome to wear a face mask – at your own campsite.

If I have a private business and I determine that for the safety of my customers and my employees you must wear a mask to enter my place of business then I have that right. By banning masks in a public health emergency your are taking away the individuals right to protect themselves in the way they feel is best.
But let’s be clear here, masks are NOT for your protection. (that’s what PPE are for) My wearing a mask is so I can protect YOU. My droplets (which can stay in the air for quite a long time and travel many feet when expelled) can infect you if I am COVID-19 positive. And since we now know that you can be COVID-19 positive and show zero signs of infection (Indiana tested folks with COVID-19 anti-bodies and a full 30% said they never experienced any signs of the disease) wearing a mask to keep your germs to yourself seems like the smart thing to do, and the science agrees!!!
I’m gun owner, and I like shooting up paper targets. So I’ll put this another way: Wearing a mask in public is like keeping your side arm in it’s holster. It’s not about protecting yourself, it’s about the safety of those around you. I wouldn’t put up with someone waving a possibly loaded gun around and I won’t put up with someone waving their possibly infected breathe around either.

Wisconsin has had Covid cases on the rise the last few days. The highest number of cases reported since the pandemic started. Ann’s way of thinking is a good indication why.
Probably no coincidence that it was just about 2 weeks ago that the supreme court struck down the stay at home order.
Reasons not to stay here:
1) She shows she has no respect for others.
2) She threatens. (She’s implying that in the ten minutes it’ll take cops to arrive, she’ll be taking matters into her own hands)

4) According to her statements, there’s a lot of crime in the area caused my roving gangs of mask wearers.

LiVan, that is not correct. In fact, the actual death total from COVID-19 is probably much higher but we haven’t tested everyone who died before we understood what the virus was. Most scientists who track deaths due to pandemics agree that this is just the confirmed cases of COVID-19 and that there actual total is higher. How much higher will take many months to figure out. I >think< what you're referring to is what a friend of mine in the medical field was lamenting is that fact that people who had serious underlying conditions such as diabetes, heart disease etc that probably would not have lived much longer anyway and contracted COVID-19 were labeled as COVID-19 deaths when their serious underlying medical conditions likely contributed to their death. Hopefully the medical and scientific communities will come to some agreement on that and I would imagine that eventually some of those deaths will be re-classified. I’m only a short distance from Shawano so this lady has been on the local news here way too much. It just occurred to me – What would she do if the law enforcement officers she called for her “burglary in progress” showed up wearing masks?
This place needs to be shut down, she’s threatening to harm or even kill people following the recommended health practices.

I pity your family members. This is NOT the flu, it does not spread like the flu, it is an evolving, mutating virus. I live in Shawano county, wi. You forgot to add one thing to this story about annie’s Campground. She said if you had health issues you could wear a mask in her bar. It was on a case by case basis and it was up too her.
I can see where she is coming from. A lot of people are pushing that you wear masks and social distance. This wearing of a mask and social distancing is really dividing this country.

I wear a mask sometimes to mow my lawn. I have a hard time breathing with a mask on. As I said before it’s my personal opinion that the national and local media keep pushing there agenda to social distance and wear masks. I was at the races this past Friday May 29th in Wisconsin. No one had a mask on and you could not social distance because the stands were full of people at the races.
Shields don’t protect against an airborne virus. The virus just goes around the shield. With a fitted mask, it has to go thru the material, such as it is.

Unfortunately, the first two weeks after contacting the virus, your symptoms are non-existent (asymptomatic). For me to believe what you just wrote about WHO and NEJM, I would have to see the actual publication….not just your interpretation.
Not so. Originally the ‘do not wear a mask’ was to protect the supply chain for those that needed them such as health care workers. It does NOT do harm to the wearer or Drs and nurses who have not been sick but wearing a mask for their entire careers would, as a demographic, have a common problem. The current recommendation is to wear a face covering and to educate yourself and use it properly. Stop adjusting it, touching mask and then your face, stop putting it down on your counter when you come home which contaminates that surface, etc. Current research is showing that if everyone was to wear a face covering in public spaces, transmission would decrease. The research and knowledge is developing at an astounding pace. What was stated in March or April won’t necessarily reflect the current information. It can be difficult to keep up!
Her Facebook page makes NO mention of this. That I can find, anyway. As an immunocompromised person, I would be VERY angry to book a space here, only to arrive and find out Annie is more interested in money than the safety of her guests. I get it that she owns the campground and can make her own rule. HOWEVER, she should warn guests beforehand so there are no surprises.
Notify yes, warn no. She just went on my list of better campgrounds to visit. It’s fair to inform, but for many people this is a bonus not hindrance. I cancelled several reservations that demanded masks and staying on your site, and one staying inside the RV — there is no point moving the rig if the scenery is the same: locked inside.

The fact that when a Vaccine becomes available, you will have it yourself, and some folks will die from that vaccine, just as they always do when any vaccine is mass provided. I applaud your decision to do this and stand up for your rights. In the beginning it may have been a good idea, but with enough evidence now showing that in most cases it is not needed And the store bought masks or home made masks, anything other than N95 do virtually no good on this size of this virus molecule. Even N95 masks let anywhere from 5 to 25% of the virus through, and that’s only if you have been trained in how long and the proper fitting in how to wear that mask.
I can’t believe some of the comments people have said about your decision on your private property. And how vile some of these people are. And there are others that are just simply uninformed or believe everything the government tells them in order to control them, it’s a shame. If I was in your neck of the woods I would definitely visit your campground.

It’s really hard to believe after all these months, and all the information from all around the world, that anyone could still so thoroughly and totally misunderstand the purpose of wearing a simple face covering.
The mask isn’t to stop individual free floating virus particles. (There’s no consensus if they even exist.)
It’s to stop various much larger sizes of water droplets containing multitudes of virus particles emitted by people coughing, talking, breathing. Almost any piece of cloth will absorb some of these droplets. A good mask will absorb many/most.
Matt, it’s been said but bears repeating. Masks are to stop droplets from your exhales or coughing from spreading to others. They are NOT to protect yourself but those around you. Safely keeping your distance (6′ to 10′ please) and staying at home if you show any signs of illness are another great way to protect those around you.
But with 30% of people showing no signs of infection but shedding virus all the same, NOT wearing a mask in public is just short of walking up to people and coughing on them.
Be a responsible adult. Wear a mask. Stay at home if you can. Keep a safe distance from others. Wash your hands.

It seems to me that when someone drives up, (s)he can be identified within the 10-ft. safety distance, and then allowed to mask before coming in to register. Or even identified at the door before coming in. I assume she doesn’t have a camp store, since campers would have to unmask before making a purchase as well?
The reasoning makes it sound as if she has had trouble before — or that this may be a high crime area to begin with. The combination of disregard for safety and that hidden message would cause me to drive past.

I have no problem with her request, we don’t wear them and we are in our 80’s, carry one in the vehicle just in case a location requires wearing them. Attended church this morning, went out for brunch inside restaurant, table on our right had 8 guests, visited with guests seated at the table to our left. Only 20 minute wait to get seated, optional to wait inside our outside as we waited. Much of this has caused a lot of paranoia. Are we careful, yes, frequent hand washing, avoid contact with sick people. Just like we did with the deadly Asian Flu, and the deadly Swine Flu.
This is not the flu. Sigh.

Al, Determining the other guys health is not necessary. Wash your hands and don’t touch your face. Putting a mask on and off requires you to touch your face. It gives you a false sense of security. Oh , and wash your hands. Yes, this IS transmitted the same as any other virus, in spite of what you might read in the media. Although the CDC has changed their information several times, they now have pretty good advice. cdc.gov I was a health care worker for thirty years and worked both in nursing homes and hospitals. I worked with all kinds of patients including those with aids, back when IT was the plaque. I never got sick. hmmmm. But trust the experts. Notice that absolutely none of the so-called experts had their predictions come true. This goes back to when I was posting that this would be mostly over in JUNE, and one lady said she would trust the experts.
What is REALLY amazing to me is how many people on this site seem to think that government is the answer. If you don’t want to stay there, you have been told what the policy is. Well, it’s July and it’s far from over. As for AIDS, it is not an airborne virus so the comparison is worthless. I too, worked in hospital for years. Washing your hands is important. But this is an airborne virus that carries 6-12 feet. You may have been a good orderly or transport person but your advice about masks is wrong. Wash your hands/sanitize and put your mask on. Then touching your face is moot. You also leave out the PPE that was required in addition to hand washing. Do you know to what that refers? I didn’t get sick either, but I followed protocol set up by experts. It’s science, not opinion.

In an enclosed room that might not have enough positive ventilation, it is a good secondary precaution if you are taking care of a (masked) sick patient,to wear a mask then. So technically if you feel you need to wear a mask, that would indicate that you think you are sick. You should not be out in public if you know you are sick .

I’m a nurse working in a hospital. I’ve held the hand of many patients who have died from this virus….by themselves…why? Because they didn’t think they needed to wear a mask and was infected by another person who didn’t think wearing a mask was a big deal. People can run their businesses in whatever manner their personal foibles dictate. Doesn’t mean that I have to support them with my cash. Goodness. Masks = thieves? Really? People can be so strange. If you pull up in an RV and have gray hair sticking out of your mask, it’s unlikely your motives are nefarious. LOL
Wow .. the negative responses to your comment, Travis, show how serious the problem is of people not doing their own research and taking their view from t.v. We don’t need to wonder WHY the world is in the mess it is in.
We’re up here at Annie’s for the weekend and love it, the rules in masks haven’t been a single issue yet, it’s up to the individual, the things they have to offer are amazing, kids stuff, swimming, hiking, and we even bought a seasonal site, Annie is a very nice caring person and easy to talk to, too many people blow her comments out of proportion and spread lies
