Whether you’re a full-time RVer or an occasional weekend camper, having a few inexpensive, versatile tools in your travel arsenal can make life on the road a lot easier. One of my favorite multitaskers is cornstarch.
Most folks use cornstarch for thickening sauces in the kitchen. However, this humble powder can solve a variety of RV-related challenges—from keeping you cool and comfortable to helping with cleaning and pest control. Don’t believe me? Read on to see!
Prevent chafing
Long drives, hikes, or even exploring your campground can lead to uncomfortable chafing. A light dusting of cornstarch on those frequently rubbed areas, like inner thighs or under the arms, helps reduce friction and absorb moisture. This simple trick keeps you comfortable, trust me. It’s economical, too!
Soothe bug bites and more
Bug bites and the occasional sunburn seem almost inevitable for RVers. Mix a bit of cornstarch with a few drops of cool water to form a paste. Then gently apply it to the affected area. This can help calm irritation and help to dry out the skin until you’re able to go to the store for alternative solutions.
DIY dry shampoo
Skipping showers during busy RV travel days can leave your hair feeling a bit greasy. Sprinkle a small amount of cornstarch over your roots. Gently massage it in and then brush it through. This natural dry shampoo absorbs excess oils, keeping your hair feeling fresher for longer. (Tip: Cornstarch applied to dark hair can leave a visible residue. Use less cornstarch and rub/brush thoroughly to minimize this.)
Sand removal
Camping by the coast or near a sandy lake means sand is bound to get everywhere. A light sprinkle of cornstarch on your feet or over sandy patches on your RV floor helps to loosen the grains, making them easier to shake or vacuum away.
Pest deterrent
A border of cornstarch around food storage areas can act as a mild barrier, deterring ants and other pests from crossing over. Since many insects avoid dry powders, this inexpensive solution can help keep your space cleaner without resorting to harsh chemicals.
RV roof cleaner
RV roofs are often exposed to the elements, leading to the buildup of mildew and grime. One creative solution involves using cornstarch as a thickening agent in a homemade cleaning mixture. You can find Russ on the Road’s economical roof cleaning recipe here. Be mindful of the type of RV roof you have. Russ says his recipe is safe for EPDM roofs.
Carpet cleaner
As a carpet cleaner, cornstarch works wonders on stubborn grease, oil, and even bloodstains by absorbing the unwanted liquids from the fibers. Sprinkle a generous amount over the stain, let it sit for 15–20 minutes, and vacuum it up. Repeat if needed.
Shower cleaner
Does your RV shower have stubborn stains or soap grime buildup? A little cornstarch applied with a soft cotton cloth can make a significant difference. Rub the powder gently into the stain, then wipe the area clean to restore the surface’s appearance.
Laundry stain remover
For persistent ink and blood marks on fabrics, blend cornstarch with a little water to create a smooth paste and apply it directly onto the stain. Gently work the mixture in, then allow it to air-dry in the sunshine. Once the paste has completely set, brush off the dried powder and repeat the process, if necessary, to fully lift the stain. Then launder as usual.
Knot detangler
When your shoelaces or necklaces become hopelessly tangled, simply dust the knot with a bit of cornstarch. This helps reduce friction between fibers and allows the knot to loosen and untie. (Tip: Cornstarch will also help untangle pet fur. Apply a small amount to the tangle and rub the cornstarch in. Then begin to comb, starting from the end and working toward the skin. Keep the cornstarch well away from your pet’s eyes to avoid irritation.)
Stuffed animal refresh
For a gentle yet effective refresh, pop your children’s stuffed toys (or pet’s toys) into a zippered plastic bag with a generous shake of cornstarch. Shake the bag vigorously. After letting the toys sit for about 24 hours, remove them. Then thoroughly vacuum the toys to remove both the powder and any absorbed odors.
Shoe/boot deodorizer
Sprinkle a little cornstarch into your hiking boots or shoes. Let it sit overnight to soak up unpleasant odors. Then just shake it out in the morning for fresher-smelling footwear.
(Tip: The same trick works on your fabric-covered RV furniture. Apply a light dusting of cornstarch to your RV couch or dining chair upholstery and leave it overnight. The cornstarch will capture lingering smells. You just vacuum the upholstery the next day.)
Clean playing cards
Our well-worn pinochle cards began to stick together. So, I tossed them into a zip-type plastic bag and added some cornstarch. Then I shook the bag to distribute the cornstarch. I dusted off the cornstarch and now the cards no longer stick.

Gail- terrifically useful article! While I did generally know the properties of cornstarch, I had never stretched the knowledge to many of these applications. Thanks!
Thanks, Gail! A lot of helpful ideas on using cornstarch to help with cleaning.
Thank you for these suggestions, Gail! How do I use cornstarch? I did not use it at all. But, I will be buying a box and using it going forward, given that it removes carpet stains. Have a great day and safe travels!
