If you’re thinking about putting a sticker on your annual national park pass, here’s the risk: A ranger can reject it at the gate. The Department of the Interior has clarified that adding stickers or other adhesives to the America the Beautiful annual pass counts as an alteration. And altered passes can be declared invalid, even if the barcode and signature remain visible.
This has become an issue because many Americans do not approve of a living politician’s image, in this case of Donald Trump, being portrayed on a pass. In the past, it has traditionally been a scenic illustration.
At the same time, federal officials are emphasizing the “void if altered” rule, stickers sized specifically to fit national park passes are already being sold online. Some are decorative scenic overlays. Others are marketed as a way to customize or protect the pass. None come with any assurance that the pass will still be honored at park entrances.
That disconnect has caught the attention of many park visitors—especially RVers who rely heavily on annual passes for multi-park trips.
What “void if altered” really means
The America the Beautiful pass is a federal access credential, not a souvenir. Interior Department guidance says that any alteration—including stickers, lamination, trimming, or writing outside the signature line—can invalidate the pass.
While the rule itself isn’t new, Interior officials have recently restated it more clearly, noting that added materials make passes harder to verify quickly at busy entrance stations. That matters when rangers are processing long lines of vehicles and need to confirm validity at a glance.
If a ranger determines a pass has been altered, they can refuse it. The visitor is then left with two options: pay the entrance fee again or turn around.
Why this issue surfaced now
RVtravel.com previously reported on a federal lawsuit challenging the artwork used on the 2026 America the Beautiful annual pass, a case that drew significant reader interest and sparked widespread discussion about how the pass should represent the nation’s parks.
That legal challenge put the annual pass itself in the spotlight. As attention increased, so did questions about what visitors can and cannot do with the pass once it’s issued.
The Interior Department’s response has been consistent: Regardless of design debates, the rules governing pass alteration still apply.
Stickers are easy to find—but that doesn’t make them safe to use

A quick online search turns up vinyl stickers marketed as:
- “Park pass covers”
- Decorative overlays sized to match the pass
- National park decals that could be trimmed to fit
Some sellers frame them as harmless customization. Others describe them as a way to “protect” the card. But no third-party seller can override federal pass rules, and none can guarantee acceptance at park gates.
For RVers, the risk isn’t theoretical. A rejected pass can mean unexpected fees, delays, or a frustrating conversation at the entrance station, often after a long drive.
What RVers should do instead
If you want to protect your pass, the safest options remain simple and unexciting:
- Store it in a clear sleeve or wallet pocket.
- Keep it flat to avoid cracking.
- Sign it only where directed.
- Avoid tape, glue, lamination, or adhesives of any kind.
- Normal wear and tear usually qualifies a pass for replacement. Alteration generally does not.
Here’s one RVer’s thought: If you don’t like what you see on your park pass, keep it in a protective sleeve, then stick your “pretty” sticker on the sleeve.
The practical takeaway
In an era when nearly everything we own gets personalized, it’s easy to assume a small sticker is harmless. But national park passes are treated as access credentials, and the rules reflect that.
The bottom line is straightforward: National park pass stickers may be easy to buy, but using one on your official pass could cost you access. For RVers planning a season of park travel, that’s one small detail worth getting right before you roll up to the gate.
For RVers, the goal is simple: Get through the gate and get on with the trip. Keeping your park pass plain and unaltered is one small way to make sure the journey starts the way it should.

Makes sense, you wouldn’t put a sticker on your drivers license or credit card, why your park pass?
Really? You have to ask??
The answer to your question is really quite simple….. lefties losing it re: TDS!
I just looked at my Lifetime Senior pass.
Fine print at the bottom of the card:
“Void if altered”
PS, I don’t have to worry about someones picture on it.
Get over TDS, it’s just a park pass. His picture is sure better than having my picture on your pass. Yuck!
No, your picture would be much better!!!
Putting a sticker on it does not alter the card anymore than writing something on a dollar bill which is legal or writing on the flag It’s called the first amendment Freedom of speech
Go ahead & do it then. And spend the first of your park visit arguing with the Ranger.
There is now an alternative sleeve being sold by the Recollection project- which hides the creepy image on the passes and protects the pass at the same time. And the pass can be taken out of the sleeve when necessary to show at park entrances.
For maga types claiming TDS and get over it, I’d love to see their honest response if Joe B. had put HIS face on their park pass. Will await the calm, measured replies…
Before answering, more info is needed. Would the photo on the card be of an Autopen machine or an actual photo of JB? My measured reply will follow your reply to this RFI. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

There are much more important concerns in life than a photo of a guy who will leave office in three years. Get over yourself.
In fact, be thankful for Trump’s energy policies that have majorly reduced gas and diesel prices so we can afford to travel more. Be thankful that 9% inflation has been tamed, again making RV travels affordable. Policies that work are more important than a temporary photo.
Travel safely, people. It’s more enjoyable when you don’t sweat the small stuff.
Gas prices are lower and will continue to drop- due to increased supplies being pumped into the market by the Saudis. As a result, we are seeing less drilling and exploration in the US as it is not profitable. Low prices are the death knoll for drill, baby drill.
You do understand that the Saudis are only pumping more oil at the request of T. Right? They are not simply doing it as an altruistic gesture to lower US gas prices, right?
Then why is “T” wanting to drill on federal lands and national parks????
He says HE wants to be energy independent. Sounds like he wants to stop paying all the other countries for their oil, in the meantime, destroying our beautiful parks.
The reduction in gas prices is only temporary.
Gas prices were lower at the end of 2015 and the beginning of 2020 than they are now.
“T” was not in office.
Oh boy Bob… you just make it too easy. The beginning of 2020 huh? Maybe check your encyclopedia again on who was living at 1600 P. Ave. Bob.
Which National Park does he want to drill on exactly?
What country EXACTLY does he not want to pay/reimburse for oil? Are you implying Venezuela? If so….. we/he is liberating them, not pirating them. You know, trading food, medicine, cash, security and freedom to release them from the grip of a Mamdani, AOC, Xi, and Karl Marx style of Gov’t. which may actually contribute to ending the war in Ukraine as a byproduct. Sheesh Bob, get a grip on reality.
😎✌️
We’re buying oil from the Saudi’s in great volumes. Plus we are shipping a lot of our oil and natural gas to other countries.
I live in PA, one of the largest fracking states, and the companies are constantly upgrading the pipe lines going to eastern shore to be put on tankers.
As far as the public lands, read this.
The Trump administration has already initiated actions to eliminate or weaken protections from more than 175 million acres of U.S. landsCurrently identified U.S. lands targeted for removed or weakened protections
https://www.americanprogress.org/article/the-trump-administrations-expansive-push-to-sell-out-public-lands-to-the-highest-bidder/
Dude….. no National Park named. You said drilling in National Parks, bro. Regardless, public lands are for the public good, including recreation. Using your logic, if we discovered a miracle cure for cancer 500 feet below Old Faithful, we should be hands off…. can’t drill for a proven cancer cure, it’s a national park. WOW.
Of course were exporting oil, and gas and refined mineral spirits… IT IS A BUSINESS. Just like cars…. we import and we export. Boeing, Export. Airbus we import. Duh, bro.
That Cancelproof “dude” sure does go on, doesn’t he? I’m surprised he hasn’t found a home in D.C. yet.
Undisputed CHAMP at pushing back on hyperbolic silliness.
✌️😎
Agree. It’s not like you have to look at this card all the time. You drive into a park, hand it to the person and put it back wherever. There are so many other things to get upset over and this is NOT one of them.
This whole “sticker protest” is political hyperbolic nonsense.
Andrew Jackson was a friggin’ lifelong slave owner yet nobody refuses a $20 bill because of that, much less spend their emotional capital putting stickers on every bill they encounter.
Hate the current president’s face on an Access Pass? Get a digital one but “protesting” to the innocent people who have to collect fees at park entrances is abhorrent.
They didn’t make the decision and don’t need to deal with people’s transgressions under the guise of “free speech”.
TLDR: Political activism on a fee collector who has to decide if they want to accept your “protest” is simply wrong.
I’m so glad I got my Lifetime Senior pass a few years ago with it’s photo of a lovely bighorn sheep.
Me too!
Same here.
From Federal Register as passed in the 2004
Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act
16 USC Ch. 87: FEDERAL LANDS RECREATION ENHANCEMENT
SECTION 6804. Recreation passes(a) America the Beautiful—the National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass
(2)Image competition for recreation passThe Secretaries shall hold an annual competition to select the image to be used on the National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass for a year. The competition shall be open to the public and used as a means to educate the American people about Federal recreational lands and waters.
As far as the image on the pass, the law itself is very clear. Just saying.
I think this should be a “pick your battles” type of situation. My lifetime senior park pass stays in my wallet and only comes out for less than a minute when shown to a ranger to enter the park. I couldn’t even tell you what is on it or what it looks like, and I’ve had it for years. Just seems kinda silly to get upset about a photo that is on something you rarely even look at. Personally, I have bigger things to worry about.
Pick your battles is the correct answer, IMHO.
In the last week alone, the left has defended a narco dictator cos playing a President who was also the head Tren d Aragua and also defended a couple of hundred billion of fraud. Today, Elizabeth Warren is defending Credit Card company’s high (21%) interest rates as opposed to supporting a DJT proposal to cap CC interest at 10%. Pick your battles Poncahontas… that one is a loser.
😎✌️
Long time my friend!
What about the Honduras drug king pin that Trump pardoned? CONVICTED of trafficking 500 tons of Cocaine into the US. Hmm. Just saying.
Howdy Leonard, Happy new year.
I’m not sure how that pardon fits into the Monroe Doctrine either. That one stumped me, too.
Regardless the reason, which i don’t understand or agree with, it is apples and oranges as I don’t think that the situations are comparable
in as much as Hernandez wasn’t propping up Cuba, Iran, Russia, China or Hezbola.
I can list a dozen things I disagree with Trump on. The Hernandez pardon is one for sure. But Maduro….. totally agree. The result is soul crushing for Putin, may end the war. Iran is teetering and China just got pushed back to Africa.
Happy trails 😎 ✌️
Some folks invest far too much energy into some guy that some talking head told them to hate. The dude will be gone next term, and then you can get one with something else on it. Ask yourself: in 2029, what will all of that petty hate and bile have done for you? Will it have enlightened you? Will it bring you fond memories and experiences? No, no it won’t.
Life is too short for this. Spend the time on wiser and more fulfilling things and just ignore the picture.
…BTW, this is coming from a guy with a Military Lifetime Pass (it has a pic of Mt. Denali on it), so I have no dog in this fight.
Smile. Breathe. Forget the card decorations and enjoy the trip.
Peace.
People need to pull their heads out of their butts about the whole Trump thing.
Any narcissistic action by the supreme leader needs to be met with complete opposition. This is another disgusting use of power. Do not buy one until this is “all over”.
So your saying don’t buy a card and enjoy the parks until 2044, after JD and Marco each get 8 years? Seems like bad advise because the sanity were enjoying ain’t ending for at least 19 more years. Hahahaha. LOLOLOL. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thank you for a nice objective article!
I love my president; I voted for him three times. In my book, I should only have had to vote for him twice because I believe he won both of his first elections. The man is very vain, and when he’s out of office, his name and picture are gonna be everywhere, but that’s OK, I think he’s allowed. The media and the Democrats have given him hell, and he deserves everything he wins now, including his picture everywhere if it makes him happy
We all gave to obay pesky rules. Like em or not.
