Face it! No matter how large your fifth wheel, travel trailer, or motorhome may be, storage is a challenge. I’m here to tell you that solutions may be staring you in the face, because you can find hidden storage right at your RV cabinets. Read on to see what I mean.
Vacant cabinet space
Our RV’s kitchen cabinets are tall. You’d think that’s a good thing, but actually there’s a lot of wasted space above our small set of plates! I could stack things on top of the plates but then at least three times a day (mealtimes) all of the piled-up items could cause problems! Here are some better solutions.
- Tension rods. Position two tension rods at the same level inside the cupboard—one rod near the front of the cabinet and the other near the back. Use the rods as a makeshift shelf. The rods will easily hold a lightweight pizza pan or an aluminum baking pan. Remember to disassemble the “shelf” for moving days.
- S-hooks. Position one tension rod inside the empty cupboard space. Then put s-hooks on the rod to hold coffee mugs or handled soup mugs. Do not overload the tension rod, and remove the setup on moving days.
- DIY shelves. If you have the proper skill and tools (saw, hammer, wood glue, finishing nails) you can make additional shelves for your cabinets. Fasten three wooden strips to the sides and back of the cabinet using the glue and finishing nails. Add a wood shelf, cut to fit atop the wooden strips. Glue and nail the shelf to the rods and, once the glue sets, the shelves are ready to use. As an alternative, you can purchase a metal rail system and clips to support a shelf.
Space under cabinets
Another place to find hidden extra RV storage is underneath your cabinets. Several products can keep necessary items close at hand, yet out of your way.
- In the kitchen. Check out this fold-down spice rack. By installing this handy gadget, you can free up a kitchen drawer or cupboard space. If you don’t need the rack for spices, install flat bar magnets inside the storage rack and use it to store your knives.
- In the living area. Looking for a good place to stash your TV remote, deck of cards, or personal journal and pens? Slip this handy under-the-shelf storage container onto the bottom cupboard shelf and problem solved! Bonus: No tools needed!
- In the bedroom. This is marketed as a kitchen utensil holder, but it works just as well for storing necklaces, bracelets, and scarves under an RV bedroom cabinet or closet shelf.
Cabinet door exterior/interior
- Knobs. Talk about double-duty! These knobs will help you open and close your RV cabinets and also serve as a convenient place to hang dish towels to dry.
- Over-the-cabinet door solutions. No matter whether you use these over-the-door storage solutions on the inside or outside of your RV cabinets, you’ll love the extra storage they provide.

We have used the small plastic-coated wire shelves with legs in the cabinets of all 3 of our RVs. They allow us to put bowls and cups on a shelf, with plates and saucers below. Same with food items in cabinets and pantries. Because they are not permanently attached, they can be moved around as utensil and appliance storage needs change. We have used the same set of wire shelves for 12 years and they are still holding up well.
Likewise. They almost double your shelf space.
Thank you, Gail! Safe travels! 🙂
Just like the utensils holder, fold down recipe holder. My wife loves hers!
