We have battled black tank odor off and on for the last 8 years in our RV. We’ve tried just about everything—flush, flush, flush! We’ve hosed water down the vent on top of the RV to make sure the vent was actually connected to the black tank. Not to mention, I can’t even count the number of different brands of black tank deodorant and tissue digester we’ve tried. Nothing seemed to work! Until now…
It never seemed to matter which way the wind was blowing or how fast we were going. Many times that telltale odor engulfed the motorhome. Sometimes I could run the vent fans and lessen the gag-worthy stench, but sometimes even that wouldn’t work.
I am dedicated to flushing and not dumping the black tank before it gets even close to full to avoid the dreaded poop pyramid. Not dumping too late, either, to make the flush valve clog. I did that just once and learned my lesson
So, when I read Dave Solberg’s suggestion on RVtravel.com to try Happy Campers RV Toilet Treatment, I ordered some on Amazon. The Amazon page was filled with glowing reviews.
We are on day four of traveling from Minnesota to Mississippi in over 90-degree temps and we have no suffocating smell—finally! We pulled over for gas at a truck stop this morning and I thought our luck had changed, but it was only the semi-truck tractor pig trailer next to us!
I am truly a HAPPY CAMPER!

Oh, and don’t miss my review of another item Dave recommended to me, Tank Blaster holding tank cleaner. It works well, too!

The standard waste vent cap at the roof line is designed to do one thing, let air enter from the roof to allow the waste tank to be drained. It does not work well to let (stinky) air out, so it seeps through the toilet. I swapped our caps for the Lippert 360 Siphon cap (white or black). The stink is gone. I use the RV Travel recommended Liquified RV Toilet Treatment to break down the waste in our tank.
They won’t ship it to Ca.
WOW Cali has become a real problem!!
Yes, and they won’t ship Gel Gloss wash and wax either. There must be at least dozens of products they won’t send here….maybe thousands. It’s a big pain.
It is my go-to digester. I use along with a mixture of Dawn & Calgon Water Softener.
We have been using this product for at least 5 years. Bought the first at a RV dealer in CA. Bought on Amazon the second time and had it shipped to our home in CA. It’s not the company that won’t ship to CA. CA won’t let them. Fortunately we go to Oregon often since we live in the beautiful northern part of CA and we buy it there. Great product. Have never had any oder since we started using it.
So how did you get it shipped there? Amazon won’t send it to Ca. anywhere!
It’s sold at Walmart.
Thank you, Nanci! 🙂 We happily and successfully used Happy Camper from 2016 until 2021 or 2022. At that point, I became aware of some brouhaha surrounding it and switched. Since then, we have used several different treatments and noticed little, if any, difference. Given your and Dave’s recommendations, I will return to it in several months, whenever our present supply is exhausted. 🙂 Thanks again, have a great week, safe travels, and safe stays! 🙂
Neal what’s the brouhaha about?
That Happy Campers had formaldehyde in it, Drew. There were also assertions at the time that it did not promote the growth of micro-organisms, bacteria that would break down the black tank contents. I think that I became awate of this at the Newmar owners’ rally in July 2022. I did not follow-up, so the makers of Happy Campers may have disputed the accusations. Given who is recommending it, I am inclined to use it again. Have a great day, Drew, safe travels, and safe stays! 🙂
Please excuse the delayed response, Drew. Today was a travel day and I am only now starting to check email and read RV Travel. 🙂
I have tried others until I used Happy Camper and have used it since (several years). Great stuff! Better than anything else on the market.
Have used Happy Camper for years, recently in 101 degree temps in Utah. We “do” everything in our camper (#’s 1&2) and use any brand toilet paper ( I know, living dangerously) and have had no odor or clogs.
So I am confused. Does Happy Camper contain formaldehyde? I use regularly but dont have any right now to check the ingredients.
Hi, Sherry. I just Googled it and Happy Camper does not contain formaldehyde. Have a great day. 😀 –Diane at RVtravel.com
