If you’re an avid reader, you know how vital your local library can be in fueling your addiction. (We do!) Libraries are such wonderful resources—free books?! Free heat and/or A/C? Free printing? Free internet? Yes, they’re the best!
Do you have a library card? We know it may be hard as an RVer, especially if you’re a full-timer, to have a card, but perhaps when you’re “home” you find it worth having.
And don’t forget—many libraries also offer access to digital content, including eBooks, audiobooks, streaming movies, and even language learning apps, all for free with a library card. So, even if you’re on the road and nowhere near your “home” library, you might still be able to check out books and entertainment from anywhere.
Plus, many states now offer state park passes at their libraries, meaning you can visit state parks for free! Visit your local library’s website or give them a call to see if this is something they offer. It could save you money!
Also, some libraries host free events like author talks, craft nights, or educational workshops, which can be a great way to meet locals and learn something new while you’re in town. You never know what you’ll stumble upon, so always check the library schedule when you arrive in a new city or town.
Tell us in the comments if you have a card and how often you use it. Plus, have you read any books lately that you think other RVers (or anyone) may enjoy? Tell us, please! Thank you!

“The man who does not read has no advantage over the man who cannot read” – Mark Twain
i use my library card to download library books to my kindle which can be done easily when traveling (when I have good Wi-Fi)
I don’t, but the Wife has one.
Have had a library card since I learned to read
Last time I had a library card was in high school many years ago. I would have thought that such a card would have given way to technology as the index cards have.
I do not, but my wife does. I can always go with her, or ask her to pickup books or CD/DVD’s for me.
Two cards. I download to my Kindle, and often one library will have a book that I am looking for while the other does not. The library at my home base in Florida even has a woodworking shop, where I have occasionally gone to fabricate wood trim for my motorhome as needed. How cool is that?
I use my library card to download ebooks and audiobooks from Libby for free. Hoopla is another service for downloading ebooks and audiobooks. I enjoy reading and listening and also enjoy not spending money on books that I’ll only read or listen to once.
No, but the local library now supports Libby, a digital library access app that can download books to my Kindle. I intend to get my ‘card’ and especially for books I want to read ‘once and done’ it should be great.
I am an avid Genealogist (Tracing family tree) so have visited and continue to visit many Libraries as I do additional research.
Yes we did, until our library went digital and now all the cards are electronic in our library.
Yes, and use on line, from both L.A. and San Diego county libraries, as well as in the local S.D. locations
Libraries!! Love ’em! Every time we went to a new volunteer or job location, our first action was to get a library card. I kept a collection of them in a drawer just in case we went back to that library system for another seasonal job. Finally threw them away when we sold the MH, and just have one for our current (non-mobile) location. Use it every week!
Thank you for the question, RV Travel! Long ago, while in high school at a county school, I got a library card at the Chattanooga (i.e., city) Library. When I looked into getting a new card, I learned that county residents are charged $50/annually for borrowing privileges. No library branches are within 15 miles of us. Meanwhile, DW does have a library card, but only borrows electronic copies of books. Have a great day and safe travels!
I must have had one when I was 5 and 6 years old as I would walk downtown to the library to look at books on how to build a birdhouse. I didn’t have to read those kinds of books.
I have library card. Since we are none stationary full timers it is very little use. I make heavy use of my Kindle app and audio books
I use mine to download books to my Kindle! Love the library on my Kindle.
