We’re going to let you in on a little secret: We woke up this morning to this new poll question posted in our account. You know who wrote it? Chuck. You know who probably bought grocery store sushi yesterday? Chuck. We’d bet a California roll on it…
Anyway, when you go to the grocery store, do you ever pick up a sushi roll or two (or three) to take home for lunch or dinner? Do you scarf down a spicy tuna roll in the parking lot as a “snack”?
According to the Wall Street Journal, in 2023, Americans bought 43.7 million servings of sushi from grocery stores, marking a notable jump from previous years. Over the past four years, grocery store sushi sales have surged roughly 50% in volume and 72% in revenue. Leading the market, Kroger sells more than 40 million pieces of sushi each year, making it the top sushi retailer in the U.S.
That’s a lot of sushi! Did you contribute to those numbers?
After you vote, please leave a comment.
And remember, we’re talking about sushi bought at grocery stores specifically, not sushi takeout from a restaurant.

Never bought Sushi at all. I just can’t get myself to eat raw fish.
Not all Sushi contains raw fish. We have a outstanding Sushi restaurant near us and one of their favorites is the sweet potato Sushi. It is delicious.
Like to grab some on occasision at Publix (when they have it) and HEB when in Texas
Sushi- Japanese word for bait.
Yes, and have enjoyed it.
My first, after watching it being made in a brand new super grocery store in Tampa in the late nineties. Now it’s usually Sushi Day at Sprouts on Wednesdays.
My wife buys it for a snack when we shop at Costco.
My wife does not like the briny taste of the seaweed often used. Not a big fan of raw fish either. Since we typically do our grocery shopping together, sushi does not enter the cart. I get my rare taste when solo at meal time.
I buy it frequently in local stores that are known for top quality goods, not when traveling.
I have bought sushi twice. I was not impressed and will not likely buy again.
Sushimi is raw. Sushi is not raw fish. Our local Sams Club has xlnt sushi
We eat it as an evening snack.
I love Sushi but instead of buying it at the grocery store we go to our local Sushi restaurant and get it there so we know it is fresh and best part there is a lot of variety.
Nope, sorry do not eat bait.
No, I don’t eat bait.
I understand that sushi is an acquired taste. We usually make it ourselves as it can be pricy.
We are lucky to live part time in HI so can get fish locally from friends. BTW there is sushi that is made with cooked fish as well or avocado/cream cheese for those that do not eat raw fish.
I won’t even look at it.
Personally, we don’t eat sushi. But our kids, who live in Hawaii, buy it from the local Seven Eleven all the time, and they think it’s okay.
