2024 Keystone Bullet Crossfire 2220ML—Same floor plan done better?

Today’s RV review is of the new-for-2024 Keystone Bullet Crossfire 2220ML travel trailer. What we have is a floor plan that is very usable but, in typical Bullet fashion, both surprisingly light. Another surprise, to me, was when I went to look at the price of these.

I’m used to going to look at the price of RVs lately and just being horrified by how much even “bargain” RVs are. This one, coming in at an MSRP of $35,813, was remarkable to me. Especially considering what’s included.

This trailer is very similar in floor plan to other RVs including Keystone’s own Cougar 22MLS and the first one of this type that I saw, the Grand Design Imagine XLS 22MLE.

What is the Keystone Bullet Crossfire 2220ML?

What we have here is a travel trailer that has a rear kitchen along with seating in a slide room on the road side and a dinette on the camp side. The bathroom is tucked into the rear corner of this RV and some of you have commented on its proximity to the kitchen in competing models.

Among the things that make these floor plans winners in the eye of some customers is the fact that there is a lot of functional living space relative to the exterior size of the rig. The main seating area is across from the TV, but there’s also a good environment if you want to do some entertaining.

What makes it better

There’s a lot to like about how the Bullet line has implemented this floor plan. One of the two seating areas in these is the dinette, and I’m happy to share that this one features a movable table. Rather than the typical knee knocker poles, this is just a free-standing table. I like that.

Keystone has also put totes under the seats of the dinette, which makes that space more usable.

You could also take that table and use it over at the trifold sofa, if you’d like. This model is also available with theater seats as an option. That table factor holds true if you choose those.

The kitchen

While the Bullet Crossfire line does use the lousy 17” RV oven, they have also upgraded these to include a convection microwave—so, really, the oven is no longer a big issue. You actually could prepare a meal here.

Interestingly, the stove, microwave and 12-volt refrigerator are all in a slide box, as is the couch or theater seats. There has recently been some discussion on here about the cable slides, which is how this slide box is actuated. We never had issues with these at the RV dealership I worked at. But, apparently, that’s not universally true.

I do like that there is only one instance of a vent in the floor for the furnace, that being at the foot of the bed.

Bedroom antics

Speaking of the bed, the one here is a true 60” X 80” queen-sized bed. One of the unusual aspects of the way Keystone implemented this floor plan is that the bed is in its own room behind two sliding doors.

Funny, I could see making a grand entrance by sliding both doors open with a big “tada”-type statement.

Big changes for Bullet in 2024

Something I really liked is that Keystone has moved to Goodyear Endurance radial tires for 2024 in their Bullet line. This is a big plus. But what really surprised me is that they also are using torsion axle suspensions. This is something I expect to find in more premium brands like Rockwood, Flagstaff, and Airstream. To see this caliber of suspension in a more affordable trailer is a very pleasant surprise indeed.

Other things you’ll find are power stabilizer jacks. Again, not something you expect in an affordable line of trailers.

This trailer also benefits from being a part of the Keystone family, which means that the wiring is intentionally consistent from one trailer to the next, not at all typical in the RV industry. They also have their own AC venting system called the Blade™ system, which purportedly provides significantly better airflow.

There are other factors, too, and Keystone’s Innovation Lab really does make features that are measurably better in some cases.

Boondocking and travel access

Another area where Keystone took a leadership role was in the realm of solar power. The company was among the first to make a usable solar system standard on their RVs, which continues to be a Keystone hallmark. This trailer comes with 200 watts of solar and has several of the power outlets inside wired to take advantage of an inverter, if you choose to install one.

You can also upgrade to a 400-watt system that incorporates an inverter. Further, Keystone has been working with a major lithium battery supplier so that dealers have these batteries in stock and available to simply drop into the RVs.

Regarding travel access, this floor plan can be fully utilized even with the slide room closed for travel.

What could be better

The stove being in the slide means it’s pretty close to the wall of the slide, but only the area behind the stove is protected with a backsplash. They really should put that same material on the side wall, as you know it’s eventually going to be damaged by whatever you’re cooking.

I don’t like to comment on interior design as I feel that it’s subjective. But I do think that the choice of color and decor highlights the fact that this is on the lower end of the price spectrum. It’s decent cabinetry, but instead of a wood tone it’s just, well, gray.

Conclusions

Overall, I like this offering from Keystone quite a bit. I think this might be one of the more salable models if I still worked at the dealership. The fact that the bedroom is in its own space with a door to separate it from the rest of the interior, plus the usable interior overall, along with a price point that is quite attractive make this a real winner. Add those Goodyear Endurance tires and torsion axle suspension along with the other Keystone features and you have a trailer that is well worth considering.

My biggest complaint with this trailer is how much trouble it would be to make the bed. Otherwise, I think it is very workable.

Besides the small oven and prison gray woodwork, there appears to be carpet in the slide. And what size vent fan is in the bathroom? I would certainly want a usable fan there since it is right next to the kitchen!

The real queen bed, torsion axle, Goodyear tires, and solar-battery-inverter options are definite positives. They show that Keystone is moving part-way in the right direction.

It seems to have become fashionable to criticize Keystone for any of their offerings. Novitiates to the marketplace appear to be more favorable at the moment. Tony, thanks for an even-handed assessment here. I love the collapsible, movable dinner table. RockStaff has been offering this for years. It’s popular for good reason. The Keystone Innovation Lab is constantly copied by its competitors. The Executive who made 1-800-GOT-JUNK into a billion dollar company actually coined the phrase: R & D stands for rip-off and duplicate. It’s popular with YouTube vloggers to use the phrase without attribution. Keystone made this Bullet relevant. Priced it under $50K. Great.

Tony,
The location of the water heater seems rather misplaced. Has anyone explained why they chose that location?

I purchased a new 2022 Keystone Cougar in January 2023. My TT is a piece of junk. Nothing but problems resulting in cancelled camping trips. In August 2023 I was told I need a new roof. Keystone is arguing about replacing the roof under warranty. NEVER buy a Keystone RV.
