Park ranger’s 12 tips for the best national park adventure

By Russ and Tiña De Maris
After 37 years of serving as a National Park Service ranger, Tom Haraden knows a thing or two about visiting national parks. We’ll share two of those things, plus ten more. These are 12 tips for the best national park adventure.

1. Slow it down!

If you’ve spent any time in a national park, you’ve probably seen it. Visitors who put on their track shoes and run from one scenic outlook to the next. Squeeze off a selfie and run for the car. In a story posted on Business Insider, Haraden said that’s the first major mistake. He advises tourists to slow down. Instead of bringing a “checklist” bring a book. Sit by a stream, open it, and read.

2. Forget about solitude

National Parks are getting more popular by the year. If you’re looking for quietness, do advance work. …

Ask Dave
Can my truck tow my trailer based on this weight data?

Last November I received an email question from a reader who had a Toyota Tacoma and a nuCamp TAB trailer. She wanted to know if she could tow it safely. I asked for specs on the Tacoma and to weigh the truck and trailer at a CAT Scale.

New 2024 Keystone Bullet 265FKS – Catchin’ a kitchen vibe

Storage and counter space are highlights of the Bullet 265FKS

Today’s RV review is of the 2024 Keystone Bullet 265FKS travel trailer. This would be a great couple’s camper, with a front kitchen and a rear bed slide that sports a king-sized (sorta) bed. This is also a new floor plan for Keystone’s Bullet line. They’ve had the benefit of seeing how others do things and learning from them.

Quick tip
A handy trick for gum box storage

We received this quick tip from reader Barbara Field: “Just sending an idea that others may benefit from. We have a number of cordless appliances like a lamp, make-up mirror, etc. The question: Where do I store the cords when not recharging? I am using plastic gum boxes! They fit neatly in the drawer and are easy to find.” Thanks, Barbara!

Recipe of the day
Crock Pot Cheeseburger Mac

by Leena Corral from La Mirada, CA

This is an easy dinner that moms and kids will love. It’s cheesy, meaty and full of flavor. The kids will love the creamy, hearty meal and mom will love how easy it is to make. Once everything is in the Crock Pot, you only have to give it an occasional stir while it’s cooking, fold in cooked macaroni and, voila, dinner is ready.

Trivia

The terms “uppercase” and “lowercase” come from shelving. Back when printed material had to be handset by a printer, the letters were arranged by the frequency in which they were used. The infrequently used capital letters went in the “upper case,” usually a slanted shelf above the main work area, and the frequently used uncapitalized letters went in the “lower case,” an easily accessible shelf closer to the workstation.

Readers’ pet of the day

“This picture was taken on our way to Alaska in 2016. Tracker (Golden Retriever) enjoyed the back seat of our truck looking out the front window with his head on my husband’s shoulder. Unfortunately, Tracker is no longer with us, but looking at this picture makes us smile.” —Denise Atkinson

Send us a photo of your pet with a short description. We publish one each weekday in RV Daily Tips and in our Sunday RV Travel newsletter. No blurry photos, please! Please do not submit your photo more than once. Thanks!

If SoftStartUp price was a lot lower, they would sell more and spend less on advertising.

When I took Graphic Arts as a shop class in Jr High one of the skills we learned was hand setting lead type and doing printing projects on manual printing presses. I vividly remember the upper and lower cases. They were both on the same sloped “shelf” with the bottom of the upper case just resting on the top of the lower case. The cases also contained the “spaces” that needed to be inserted between words and lines. Other cases had drawers, like a card catalog in a library, for even less utilized type. Like the really large type for the first letter of the opening paragraph of a story that spans several lines. Then different cases for different normal point sizes & type faces.

What a change from today where one now just asks a robot to create content and in seconds it spits out an impersonal result ready to publish at the click of a mouse. No wonder work satisfaction is dropping and people are confused about what their contribution really is.

Aha! Exactly so, Mikal! 🙂 After my federal agency was disorganized (my description, not theirs), I made sure that I arrived early enough to work to make the coffee for our little “club.” Thereby I ensured that I made some contribution to the agency each day. Aside from making coffee, I could never again be sure of making any. Have a great week and safe travels! 🙂

Quick Tip of the day + photo of Tracker = an opportunity to remind folks that sugarless gum (as pictured) containing xylitol is deadly poison for dogs. We came within inches of losing our Sadie, who ate a whole package of gum, plastic box and all.
