Today’s thought

“If you want to be happy, you have to be happy on purpose. When you wake up, you can’t just wait to see what kind of day you’ll have. You have to decide what kind of day you’ll have.”—Joel Osteen

Tip of the day
You need a jump starter. Seriously.

By Tony Barthel
You should have a portable jump starter. Seriously. But why, you ask? Many reasons.

I have had a portable jump start device that lives in my truck for years. The most obvious reason to have one is to jump start a vehicle with a dead or weak battery. But it can serve a lot of other purposes as well.

The most obvious reason to have one of these is, of course, because the battery that starts your vehicle is low. With the way the universe works, this normally happens on a cold and rainy night when you’re in a big hurry. Of course. Continue reading.

How a pig nearly changed U.S. history

By Chuck Woodbury
One of the America’s most unusual wars involved only one casualty—a pig—and yet it could have changed the course of history. The bizarre conflict took place on what is now Washington state’s San Juan Island and involved American and British troops, and even warships. Even if you’re not into history, this is fascinating reading.

Camping in City and Town Parks coverBook for cheap city and town park camping
In most cases, camping in city and town parks costs less than nearby private or other better-known public camping areas. In many cases, the overnight fee is $10 or less, with many sites still free. Some even include free or inexpensive utility hookups. Here is a directory of these under-publicized parks.

Quick tip
Bears will eat about anything. Do not feed them human food

Black bears are omnivores that eat almost anything with calories. In summer, most of their diet is plants, along with insects, fish, reptiles and amphibians. Young bears quickly learn whether to avoid people or seek out human food. Bears that find trash along trails often become dependent on it, putting themselves at risk for developing aggressive behavior toward humans. No matter how cute or hungry they appear, never feed or approach a bear. Help keep bears wild by leaving no food or trash behind. You are more likely to encounter bears when moving quietly and traveling early and late day when they are most active.

And the survey says…

We’ve polled RVtravel.com readers more than 5,000 times in recent years. Here are a few things we’ve learned about them:

• When eating Oreo cookies, 16 percent eat the filling first, then the cookie.
• 9 percent have had something stolen from their campsite.
• 37 percent have had a bear in their campsite.

Trivia

In 5 B.C., ancient Rome became the first city to reach a population of one million. It would be more than eighteen centuries, in 1800, before the second such city, London, would reach that milestone.

WORD OF THE DAY: Fernweh (German): A longing to travel to faraway places—the opposite of homesickness. Many of us RVers know the feeling well.
