Tour the affordable, all-electric 2024 Catalina Summit 164BHX travel trailer

In the video above we join the team from Big Truck Big RV at the Houston RV Show for a tour of the tiny 2024 Catalina Summit 164BHX travel trailer.

For such a tiny space, they managed to pack a lot of great features into the Catalina Summit 164BHX travel trailer. To start, I am amazed that a tiny trailer like this has a substantially larger cargo-carrying capacity than the Bowlus Volterra (base price 305K) or many other larger and pricier trailers.

Upon walking in, you are greeted by a queen-sized bed to the right and a jackknife sofa that converts into another bed directly in front. There is no divider. If it were me, I would outfit the bed as a day bed with a colorful spread and a lot of pillows. That way it won’t look like you are walking into someone’s bedroom during the day.

This tiny trailer also sports two smaller bunks in the back corner, so it sleeps 6 people!

The all-electric kitchen features a surprising amount of counter space, an induction cooktop, a microwave, and a small refrigerator. A single farmhouse-style sink helps you clean up.

The bathroom is cramped but functional.

More nice features of the 2024 Catalina Summit 164BHX travel trailer

  • Electric awning
  • Black tank flush
  • Exterior speakers
  • JBL interior speakers
  • Exterior leash link D ring hookup for pet leashes
  • Cambered structural steel I-beam frame
  • R-7 fiberglass insulation throughout
  • 19,000 BTU furnace
  • GE 13,500 BTU central A/C
  • Some alarms and a fire extinguisher
  • Prepped for solar

What’s not to like?

There are only two back stabilizer jacks, nothing in the front. This is not the end of the world—just not ideal.

In a ridiculous trend I am seeing more and more often, the shelving above the bed is useless unless you never intend to move.

I don’t like that the bathroom is not a single-piece surround. It’s just an invitation for eventual water damage, in my experience.

This trailer is all-electric, with no propane at all. This can be a pro or con depending on your views and needs. For me, it is a firm negative. I like to boondock, as I would suspect most people buying a trailer this small would, too. Propane just gives you so many more options and longer off-grid times even when it’s cloudy or rainy. Yes, it comes with a generator, but you are not going to be very popular constantly running a noisy generator (unless you get FAR off the grid where it can’t be heard). But generators take fuel too. Give me propane, I say. This would be a deal breaker for me.

Under the kitchen sink is a tiny electric fireplace. At first, I thought this was cool. But on second thought, it is taking away valuable storage apace. Again, I say give me propane. With a trailer this small you could easily heat with an electric space heater like this or a portable propane heater like when off-grid.

I didn’t see the propane tank you spoke of.

Thank you, Cheri! 🙂 I agree, the lack of propane is silly if the manufacturer’s target customer boondocks. I guess that cistomer doesn’t boondock, or hunt or fish while using this RV as a home base. Well, knowing what does not work is almost as good as knowing what does. Thanks again and safe travels! 🙂

I see no need for that fireplace. It takes up what could be storage space. Not a fan of the bunk beds but that’s just me. If mom and dad have two kids going camping with them, I can’t see how this could be ANY more crowded. Wow. No mention of any solar options so it’s either an RV park with power, or a constantly running generator. Not good. And, does everyone eat with a tray on their lap? Face it, outside eating is not always an option.

When I clicked on the link at the bottom of the review, it showed a 20# propane tank on the tongue, a 2-burner propane stove, and a 6-gallon propane-electric water heater. No mention of a solar or all-electric option at all. Maybe the one in the video was just a show prototype to get audience reaction to an all-electric RV?

This is for a full hook up rv park. I agree, storage over fireplace. No hanging closet space. The generator is a noisy type. One burner cook top would be difficult. Also, having a generator defeats the purpose of all electric. It is like using a gas generator to charge an electric car. Not for me.
