U.S. gasoline prices are climbing again, with the national average for regular unleaded rising 10 cents over the past week to $3.94 a gallon, according to AAA. The increase puts the national average within a few cents of the $4 mark as higher crude oil prices continue to work their way to the pump.
Instability along the Strait of Hormuz is contributing to the increase at the pump and pushing crude oil prices toward $80 per barrel.
For RV owners planning summer trips, the increase could add noticeably to fuel costs, particularly for larger motorhomes that consume significantly more gasoline than passenger vehicles.
AAA said higher oil prices are the primary reason for the latest jump. The recent increase in crude oil costs has pushed wholesale gasoline prices higher, and those increases are now reaching consumers.
Despite the nationwide rise, prices still vary widely by state. Drivers in the South and parts of the Midwest continue to pay some of the nation’s lowest prices, while California, Hawaii and Washington remain among the most expensive markets.
Diesel prices also continued to edge upward. That’s important news for owners of diesel-powered motorhomes and tow vehicles, who are already paying substantially more per gallon than gasoline users.
AAA recommends motorists save fuel by combining errands, avoiding excessive idling, maintaining proper tire pressure and using fuel price apps to compare prices before filling up.
If crude oil prices remain elevated, analysts expect gasoline prices to continue rising in the coming days, making this one of the more expensive stretches of the summer travel season.
