Winnebago recalls motorhomes: Propane tanks may fall off

Winnebago Industries, Inc. (Winnebago) is recalling certain 2025 Minnie Winnie, Navion, Porto, Spirit, View, and Vita recreational vehicles. The LP tank mounting bracket fasteners may have been improperly tightened, causing the tank to detach. A detached tank can become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash. Potentially 696 motorhomes are affected by the recall, which is being blamed on the work of a new production line employee.

Dealers will inspect and correctly tighten the LPG tank mounting assembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed April 10, 2025. Owners may call Winnebago customer service at 1-800-537-1885. Winnebago’s number for this recall is 195.

Notes

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or go to nhtsa.gov.

Winnebago propane tanks detach—New guy is the fall guy

In mid-November 2024, Winnebago got a claim involving an LP tank mounting bracket coming loose on delivery to a dealership. The company investigated and an audit of 392 RVs still on company premises found six of them had loose fasteners.

How did Winnebago figure out what motorhomes to recall? The company’s official report to NHTSA says, “The recall population was determined by identifying the production start date of the new employee and when the internal campaign was initiated.”

It begs the question: Wouldn’t it be wise to have someone check the work done by new hires? The recalled motorhomes were produced from March 2024, clear into November. Did Winnebago use propane to cook the egg that it now has on its corporate face?

Did Winnebago learn nothing from Pinto? “Attach the gas tank, attach the gas tank, just remind me to attach the gas tank.”

How about Ralph Nader and the Corvair in the 60’s?

Well, we had two Corvairs in the family and they were great little cars, fun, and I never felt like I was going to tip over. I did not agree with Nader, HOWEVER, one day my sister-in-law was driving on a residential street and the motor just fell out right down to the pavement. Oh, Well! I get your point, however. I guess Corvair should have “Attached the Motor!”

Thank you for the news and associated warning, Russ and Tina! A new employee, huh?!? Did this unnamed person happen to previously have worked at Forest River? Just wondering as there has been no Forest River recall yet this week. Have a great day and safe travels!

Attaching a propane tank should be considered a critical operation when considering the consequences of not doing it correctly. So who put a brand new hire, obviously unsupervised or quality checked, on a critical operation?

If you want to be even more scared, they probably have unsupervised new hires running electrical and propane appliances and lines as well.

Unbelievable! And, the article or recall states that if the tanks fall off they “may’ cause a crash. How about a frigging explosion! Gee, let’s see, propane, electricity, sparks, impact, you’d think all that would be pretty darn dangerous, plus a crash!
