Today’s thought

“History gives answers only to those who know how to ask questions.” —Hajo Holborn

Need an excuse to celebrate? Today is National Wanna Get Away Day!

On this day in history: 1928 – Aviator Amelia Earhart becomes the first woman to fly in an aircraft across the Atlantic Ocean (she is a passenger).

18 ways to use “single-use” items more than once

By Gail Marsh
Did you know that many so-called “single-use” items can often be reused—even more than once, in some cases? Reusing not only means less trash going to the landfill, but it also means more money stays in your pocket. That saved cash can go towards fuel, food, and campground fees, which are all on the rise. So, let’s get to the savings!

Paper towel. If you used a paper towel simply for drying water off a clean item, you could reuse that paper towel. Just let it dry and put it to use again.

Dryer sheet. After using a dryer sheet for the laundry, you can reuse it again to dust off your RV furniture and window blinds, shine your rig’s chrome faucets, or clean your laptop’s screen. In fact, here are 17 ways you can use a dryer sheet (and yes, they work!).

Ask Dave
Should there be sealant between RV shower pan and side panel?

Hi Dave,
I am brand-new to RVing, and I purchased a 2024 BT Cruiser 5210! The size is just perfect for my plans. I have a question about the shower. I noticed the walls at the shower base do not have any caulking or sealer. Should I seal it with a good household bath and kitchen caulk? Or, maybe that is left unsealed for a reason? —Dave, 2024 Gulf Stream B Touring Cruiser 5210

Video takes you on tour of vintage 1975 Airstream Argosy motorhome

1975 vintage Airstream Argosy motorhome and Patrick Boticelli from New Jersey Outdoors

By Cheri Sicard
In this video, we join Patrick from New Jersey Outdoors for a tour of a classic vintage RV, a 1975 Argosy motorhome.

This 20-foot model is the smallest motorhome they made and the rarest of all as Airstream only made 200 of them. It’s the size of a camper van but built on a Chevrolet P30 Class A chassis, including dual rear tires and dual exhaust pipes.

The interior of this vintage motorhome is all original, including the curtains and orange shag carpet it came with.

Around the Campfire: A wanderin’ widower lives out his RVing dream

By Gail Marsh
One of the best things about RVing is the people you meet along the way. Today, I’d like to introduce you to Willie. I first met Willie while on a walk around the campground. Later that evening, Willie joined the community campfire. He sat right next to me.

Willie lost his wife and decided to put off retirement and RVing for a few years while he continued working… until it was finally time to live out their dream.

Quick tip
Easy way to find the best wildlife sightings

Gary passed along this great tip via a comment on RVtravel.com recently. He was camping for a week at an RV park near the Yellowstone West entrance. “One thing I quickly learned is that to see where all the animals are, use Google Maps with the traffic feature turned on. You’ll quickly discover where folks are pulling over to see that bear or a herd of bison. It works great and is very consistent as to where the best sightings are.” Thanks, Gary!

This would come in handy for many activities… or you could just use it in the bathtub. See what it is.

And the survey says…

We’ve polled RVtravel.com readers more than 2,500 times in recent years. Here are a few things we’ve learned about them:

• 13 percent have been bitten by a wild animal.
• 10 percent say they play board games in their RV very often, and another 18 percent say they play them every once in a while.
• 16 percent admit to singing in the shower.

Recipe of the day
Summertime Corn Salad

by Mary Ann Wheeler from Broken Arrow, OK

A wonderful summertime corn salad that’s full of fresh veggies. The shoepeg corn is slightly sweet and a nice contrast to the tangy dressing. We love the crunch from the cucumber and green pepper. Using yogurt makes the dressing a little different than other creamy salads, but very good. This corn salad is a great summer side dish.

Trivia

Sea otters have a favorite rock and carry it everywhere with them. The cute little critters need something to crack open shells to get their food, and what better tool than a rock to help them do so? The otters keep a rock (one they’ve chosen as good and sturdy!) with them hidden under flaps of skin under their arms. Once they’ve collected enough shells, they’ll float on their back, find their rock and start cracking shells for mealtime.

Readers’ pet of the day

“This is our precious 8-year-old ‘Layla’ Greyhound. She was born in Kansas and trained for a year. Raced in California for a year, then raced in Florida. At 3 1/2 years old we rescued her straight off the tracks. We continued our vacation. We taught Layla how to do the five steps up into our coach, traveled to Alabama, and continued home to Ontario, Canada. Layla, in this pic, is taking care of her daddy, who just had a knee replacement. Layla is one of the most loving and adorable dogs we have ever had. We love her to death!” —Lu McNab

Loved your photo of Layla. We also had a retired track greyhound as a pet through ReGAP. Lance (who came to us from Kansas) got along great with our Irish Wolfhounds. We lost him many years ago but he lived to 16+ years.

That is wonderful to hear that ‘Lance’ lived to 16+ years. Layla is now 8 1/2 – she has our hearts. We’ve had a Dalmation / 3 Labs at different times & a Siberian Husky. ** Our Greyhound beats them all – she is so loving! Thanks for your note/reply!

Over the years I have heard nothing but good stuff about retired greyhounds. I guess the only problem with them is that you can’t let them run around on their own.

Besides having to protect greyhounds from their love of running far and wide, forget other pets! Ours would also destroy any toy that had eyes. Otherwise, a sweet dog.

Bravo to you for saving Layla from a sad end to her racing career. I am not a fan & am glad they are banning the sport more & more. Layla is a lovely nurse for your hubby.
