In the video below, Amanda of Adventuring with Amanda teaches us how to clean portable solar panels, something that everyone with a portable power station will need to know how to do.
As I write this, my solar panels desperately need cleaning as they are covered in dust from the desert in Quartzsite. But even without wind and desert sands, your portable solar panels will eventually get dirty no matter where you use them.
Dirty solar panels can be significantly less efficient than clean ones, although, to be fair, it usually takes a lot of dust and dirt buildup to make this happen. If yours don’t seem to be working as well lately, this is a good place to start troubleshooting.
What you need to clean portable solar panels
- A microfiber cloth or brush
- A textured rag like a towel
- A spray bottle of water
OR - Amanda likes to use a Swiffer pad; just wipe down the panels with this, and you are done.
How to clean portable solar panels
Give it a quick wipe down dry to remove as much dust as possible. Then, spray the water on the microfiber brush or the cleaning rag, NOT on the solar panel itself.
While you are at it, remember to wipe down the cord(s) that come with the panel, as these can also get mighty dusty and dirty.
That’s all there is to it. Easy, peasy, clean solar panels!

I think that if all 4 panels were cleaned, it would work much better?
They do, well a little better. I am always amazed at how much dust can be on them and they still function well (I am in Quartzsite now and it has been brutal, it was almost white out conditions with dust yesterday.
Thank you, Cheri! We haven’t any solar panels, so this is extremely helpful for my archived information. Have a great day and safe travels!
