Portable DIY RV skirting for cold weather

By Cheri Sicard
The video below introduces us to Silver of the USS Overlander YouTube channel and her portable DIY RV skirting project.

Silver made the video in freezing weather to show that there are things you can do to keep a non-four-seasons rig from freezing in cold weather. Silver and her husband needed their cold-weather solution to be portable, as they did not have room for foam boards, and temporary, as they were moving three or four times a week.

The couple used marine-grade vinyl to make the DIY RV skirting. The vinyl is available in a variety of colors, so the skirting and RV can be coordinated.

They used a snap system to attach the vinyl to the RV, which Silver discusses in more detail in the video. The snaps hold everything firmly in place when needed and allow the skirting to be removed easily and quickly.

Watch the video to see how all this came together. Silver says it works well. The temperatures have been in the 20s all week, and they have had no problems with pipes freezing.

Yes, you can buy RV skirting, but making the DIY version will save you a bundle of money.

Placement of the water supply system can be very important. We have been down to 20F in our 21′ Gulf Stream TT. With one exception (that GS could have easily avoided), the entire supply system is inside the heated cabin. There is no belly cover. I used foundation foam insulation underneath between the pump and point where the fresh water tank line reenters the cabin. And I shortened and insulated the low-point drains. So long as we have heat, use the water heater enough to prevent freeze from the exterior side, and put antifreeze in the holding tanks, we are good.

Thank you, Cheri! Very interesting. As they say, “necessity is the mother of invention.” Happy new year and safe travels!

We have a lot of customers using our Xtreme heaters under skirted rigs to prevent freezing. I won’t plug the website without permission but users can be found on TikTok, YouTube and Facebook.
