When you think of Colorado, the stunning Rocky Mountains immediately come to mind, but this state is also home to a rich rodeo tradition. It’s not too late to attend a Colorado rodeo in 2024. There are still plenty of rodeos to see, each offering a slice of the Wild West with a generous amount of patriotism and amazing skills on display.
Rodeo history
Rodeos have deep roots in American history, tracing back to the Spanish settlers and cowboys in the 19th century. These early events were practical competitions among cowboys to display their ranching skills. Fast forward to today. Rodeos have become a symbol of Western culture, complete with thrilling events, music, and a strong sense of community and patriotism.
Upcoming Colorado rodeos
Several Colorado rodeos remain on the calendar for 2024. From small-town gatherings to large-scale events, here are a few rodeos you might want to check out.
Events for all ages
Rodeos offer a variety of events that cater to different ages and interests:
Adults
- Bull riding. Arguably the most thrilling event, where cowboys attempt to stay on a bucking bull for eight seconds.
- Saddle bronc and bareback riding. These events display the cowboy’s ability to ride wild horses.
- Steer wrestling. Also known as bulldogging, where cowboys leap from their horses to wrestle a steer to the ground.
- Barrel racing. Cowpokes ride their mounts as fast as possible around three barrels set in a cloverleaf pattern.
- Team roping. A timed event where two cowboys work together to catch and tie a steer.
Kids
- Mutton busting. A fan favorite where children ride sheep, aiming to stay on as long as possible.
- Calf scramble. Children line up in the arena as calves with ribbons on their tails are released. Each child tries to grab a ribbon. The first to do so wins.
- Junior rodeo events. Many rodeos offer scaled-down versions of adult events for younger participants, fostering the next generation of rodeo stars.
- Petting zoos and carnival rides. These add-ons make the rodeo a fun day out for the whole family.
Patriotism
One thing you’ll notice at every rodeo is the strong sense of patriotism. The events often kick off with a grand entry parade featuring the American flag, followed by the singing of the National Anthem. It’s a moment that brings everyone together, celebrating not just the sport but also the country.

Great article on the abuse of animals.
Don’t forget the other states also have rodeos. The National Rodeo finals are in Las Vegas again this year. During that event in December, you can even watch senior rodeo for free. Watch the Marlboro Man get bucked of a buckin bronco! Sexy! Makes a nice winter camping escape.
Thank you, Gail! 🙂 I agree, but not enough to drive to Colorado from Tennessee. 🙂 We happened upon a rodeo at Fort Belvoir in Alexandria, Virginia near our apartment the first year (1991) we were in DC. It was interesting to see the events “live and in-person” rather than on television. The athleticism of the competitors surprised me. I will look for a 2025 schedule to see how close to our house (or a travel destination) a rodeo is scheduled. I guess it is time we went to another one. 🙂 Thanks again, have a great week, safe travels, and safe stays! 🙂
During our visit to Colorado last year, we had the opportunity to attend our first rodeo while in Southfork. We enjoyed it so much, we went again on July 4th. When the festivities were over, we enjoyed a front row seat to the town’s fireworks display! Had a blast!!
