Who says bears are dumb? One in Utah may have read “The Big Honey Hunt” and taken to heart a classic quote:
“When a bear is smart, when a bear is clever, he never gives up. And I won’t ever!” This bear ignores baited traps and now has the run of a campground and dispersed camping areas all to his own.
Bear avoids baited traps, campers shooshed away
It all started in mid-July when campers at the Soapstone Campground near Kamas reported a ravaging black bear was taking to rooting through trash receptacles. Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest officials responded by shutting down the campground and dispersed camping areas to the north and south.
Utah Division of Wildlife Resources workers responded with baited bear traps. It might have been a non-news item, but the bear has scrupulously avoided the trick, and continues to hang out in the area.
