Is a bottle opener on the bumper one of Ford’s ‘better ideas’?

Somebody at Ford evidently feels that hitching and unhitching your trailer could lead to a big thirst. If you need a brewski after hefting that stinger [slang for the part of a trailer hitch that slides into a hitch receiver] into your hitch receiver, what can you do? You may see just what you need on future Ford trucks: a Ford bottle opener built right onto your trailer hitch. Bottle opener on the bumper? What would Henry Ford say?

Bottle opener on the bumper—patent filed

fordauthority.com

We’re not really sure if this qualifies as a “better idea from Ford.” But the idea had enough merit to the Blue Oval company that they filed for a patent on the idea on August 11, 2023, and the Patent Office published the idea last week, on February 13, 2025.

Although it’s not clear, we think the bottle opener is item 26. fordauthority.com

The official Ford position was posted by carmaker follower, Ford Authority. “Submitting patent applications is a normal part of any strong business as the process protects new ideas and helps us build a robust portfolio of intellectual property,” Ford said in a statement. “The ideas described within a patent application should not be viewed as an indication of our business or product plans. No matter what the patent application outlines, we will always put the customer first in the decision-making behind the development and marketing of new products and services.”

Bottle opener on the bumper? What’s next? Perhaps Ford will include an automatically inflating air bed in pickup beds—for use after the bottle opener.

I suspect, as with everything else, “it’s corporate greed.” 😉

Some big wig at Ford couldn’t open his beer and decided the truck needed it. Next a corkscrew to open a wine bottle!
Of course it’s better then providing it inside the truck so you could open the bottle while driving.

spending time and energy on this while the Ford line of overpriced trucks sink into obscurity… I have not witnessed such a monumental shot to the foot by a company recently except for maybe the Lightning “dream”

Dodge and GM both came out with heated tailgates last fall. That’s so your hands don’t get cold when you’re pushing them.

Thank you for the comedic interlude, Russ and Tina! Haven’t needed a bottle opener since soft drinks moved to cans and later plastic bottles. But neither have I a need for a 21st-century truck. Our 20th-century model does just fine. Have a great day and safe travels!

Hell, my ’72 Blazer’s front door latches worked beautifully as wall-mounted bottle openers… for the over 30 years I had it! (No patent needed, I guess….) I think there were other cars that had similar capabilities.

Hmmm, I apparently have the exact same device on my 2003 Dodge Ram 2500! I hope that this doesn’t start some type of court battle. The litigation can go on for years, and obviously the attorney’s fees will be rolled into the cost of new trucks.

How many do people need? All ready 2 bottle openers – one on each side of opened tailgate.

Not limited to that only, my 2021 KZ Escape had an integrated bottle opener / dog leash holder right next to the entrance door looked like a paw print, really?

With my 66 Mustang you could use the male seatbelt end to open a bottle.

The seat belt buckle worked great but I had to ‘hold’ the steering wheel with my knee to open a brewski when I was cruising down the highway. I’m kidding, just kidding.

It will either be an option or you will need to get an upgraded trim package.

The twist off cap was invented to eliminate the worry of not having an opener. Never was without something to open a brewski. Claw hammers work best
