Camping evolution: As told by hot dogs

We saw this post by Rick Redner on our RVing over 70 Facebook group and it brought a smile to our face. We love this and think you will, too.

Rick writes:

Last night after dinner I reflected on the changes and phases of my four decades of camping experiences by examining how I cooked hot dogs over the years and decades.

In the beginning, whether in a tent or RV, I’d find a stick at the campsite, pierce the hot dog and cook it over a campfire.

Fast forward a decade. I decided using a stick was unsanitary, so I graduated to using a roasting fork to cook my hotdog over a campfire.

Sometime later, I decided my hotdog tasted better with a charcoal flavor so I moved to grilling them.

Fast forward three more decades. On our last trip, for the very first time on the road, we cooked our hotdogs in an AIR FRYER! (And I liked it!)

I could not decide whether this change is me:

#1. Embracing new technology.
#2. A function of getting either lazy OR old.
#3. An evolution of me wanting to cook my hot dogs in the most environmentally conscious and friendly way.

So I did what I usually do when I’m stuck. I asked my wife.

Without reading this list she answered back without a moment’s hesitation:

“It’s because you’re LAZY AND OLD.”

I decided I didn’t like the truth. Therefore, I’m going to repeat this sentence in my mind over and over until I believe it:

“I cook my hot dogs in the air fryer to reduce my carbon footprint, thereby doing my part to save the world from the existential threat of global warming.”

The real existential issue is the difference between what I thought vs. what Brenda thought.

I thought the difference in cooking hotdogs occurred because I was lazy OR old. Brenda said the difference in cooking hotdogs came about because I am lazy AND old.

I fear Brenda is right.

I love a good grilled hotdog, and have learned to like them in the air fryer, but I suspect cooking over charcoal or maybe even a campfire has a smaller carbon footprint than cranking up an air fryer and using a BUNCH of electricity that was generated most likely by coal or natural gas. I would just go with “old and lazy” along the desire for instant gratification.

Yep…plus that stick was once part of a tree that helped the environment for decades while the manufacture of the air fryer just created more polution and eventually electronic waste!

Sorry Rick! 😉😁

The stick adds an extra layer of seasoning.

I cook ours on our gas grill but I have some nice hot dog forks in case someone has a fire going.

Thank you, RV Travel and Rick! Well said! Yes, the trouble (?) of a DW (or DH), particularly beyond the first or second decade of marriage, is their failure to stroke ones ego and, instead, give an honest answer. However, the siuation is critical. The question, “How do I look in this outfit?” may require an entirely different answer if asked in the fitting room before purchase than if asked before leaving for an event. Otherwise, tell the truth. 🙂 Thanks again, have a great week, safe travels, and safe stays! 🙂

It must be getting old and having time on your hands. Lazy is opening the fridge door and grabbing one and munching down, like when a kid on the run.
