An awning that may not be so care free, this Carefree awning recall may lead to some anxiety. Carefree of Colorado (Carefree) is recalling certain Freestyle Gearbox Housing part number: 015933-001. The gearbox may develop cracks, causing the awning to extend unintentionally. An awning extending unintentionally during transit may become a distraction or road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.
In a filing with the NHTSA, Carefree indicates that some 8,115 awnings in this recall involve units installed on Winnebago, Coachmen RV, Thor Motor Coach, and Jayco RVs. Carefree will work with the manufacturers to coordinate the recall.
Remedy
Carefree will provide additional support for the internal components of the Gearbox Housing, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed February 6, 2024. Owners may contact Carefree customer service at 1-800-621-2617. This recall is an expansion of NHTSA recall number 22E-094.

Ha! Ours are Girard awnings, although Carefree awnings were installed on some (many? any?) of our make/model RV. Either way, thank you for the information! 🙂
