ALPENA, MI – Michigan’s Rockport Recreation Area along Lake Huron could soon become a top destination for RVers. With plans for a 100-site modern campground, cozy lakefront cabins, and expanded trails, this hidden gem is shaping up to be one of the state’s premier RV-friendly Michigan parks, offering everything from fossil hunting to stargazing.
Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources is asking visitors how they use the park and what amenities they’d like to see added. The survey is open through Nov. 21, and feedback from campers and RVers could help shape the park’s next chapter. You can read the plan or put in your two-cents’ worth here.
RV-friendly Michigan parks—Rockport well on the way to being one
Rockport already offers 20 miles of trails, backcountry hike-in campsites, and exposed Devonian fossils—more than 400 million years old. With the proposed upgrades, RVers could enjoy full-hookup sites, while day visitors could enjoy picnic areas, boat and kayak launches, modern restrooms, and a dark-sky viewing path with telescopes.
Trails are also getting a boost, including a mountain bike skills park. History buffs can explore a 300-acre limestone quarry, a ghost town, and sinkholes along the shoreline. The park’s mix of history, geology, and outdoor adventure makes it a perfect stop for families, solo travelers, or RV groups looking for something different than a standard campground.

Whether you’re in an RV, pitching a tent, or just stopping by for the day, Rockport Recreation Area could soon offer lakefront views, stargazing, and plenty of ways to enjoy Michigan’s outdoors. Kayakers can launch right from the park, hikers can tackle new and expanded trails, and everyone can take in the unique blend of natural beauty and historical sites.
If you want to see RV sites and cabins come to life at Rockport, now’s the time to have your say. Your input can help shape one of Michigan’s most exciting RV-friendly parks, making it a must-visit destination for years to come.
