WASHINGTON, D.C. (December 5, 2024)— The national average for a gallon of gas is closing in on the $3 mark, shedding three cents since last week to $3.03. It has been less than a dime away from $3 for over a month as the waffling decline has been agonizingly slow.
The last time the national average was below $3 was May 11, 2021. Meanwhile, today’s national average for a kilowatt of electricity at a public EV charging station remained 34 cents.
“The national average is tantalizingly close to falling below $3 a gallon, and it could happen in a few days,” said Andrew Gross, AAA spokesperson. “But 32 states already have an average below or well below $3. Hockley County, Texas, appears to have the lowest county average, at $2.30.”
According to new data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), gasoline demand rose slightly from 8.50 million b/d last week to 8.73. Meanwhile, total domestic gasoline stocks rose slightly from 212.2 million barrels to 214.6, while gasoline production decreased last week, averaging 9.5 million barrels per day.
Today’s national average for a gallon of gas is $3.03, seven cents less than a month ago and 19 cents less than a year ago.

Wow, going down around the country everywhere but here.. where it went up this week .10 a gallon to $4.09 a gallon at Costco, just east of San Diego.
Even went down a little in Vegas, Bill.
Dang 😪
Tampa Fl area fell into the $2.60s range today.
Dang X 2 😢😢
LOL! We are “thrilled” it’s below $3 a gallon (obviously, we’ll take it), but I do longingly remember when it was $1.82. Maybe we are headed back to around there and can fill our strategic reserve back up.
I remember when gas was 27 cents a gallon. The further back in time you go the cheaper things will get but it’s only relative. Incomes are a lot higher now. Maybe gas would be a lot lower if there were less people driving around in huge pickup trucks that never get the bed dirty and never tow a 5th wheel or TT.
Larry, you’re old! 😉. Yep, I too remember the “gas wars” and gas being in the 30s. (Guess that makes me old too!) My dad had a Union 76 gas station in CA and thought he would have to close down when gas broke the .40 barrier.
I remember 15.9¢/gallon during a family RV trip out west when I was a child. It was during one of the “Gas Wars.”
What about Diesel for us DP users?
Last week in Chelan, $6.00 a gallon for gas without cornflakes..
It really hurts with an 80 gallon tank.
Arrg, Eeek, Yikes!
It was regular too….
Thank you, RV Travel! I am seeing prices in the $2.5X/gallon range and lower for 87-octane gasoline. Happy new year and safe travels! 🙂
