First look: Gulf Stream Ameri-Lite 16RD—Small in size, huge on space

Small trailers keep getting smaller and smarter, and the Gulf Stream Ameri-Lite 16RD is both: really small and really smart!

In the video at the end of this post, the team from Big Truck Big RV takes us along to the Elkhart Dealer Open House for the 2026 model year. They say this one compact rig stood out by flipping the script on layout and light.

First look: Gulf Stream Ameri-Lite 16RD with rear entry

This trailer is compact, lightweight, and distinctive. The rear entry, featuring a huge rear window, changes everything, allowing designers to place larger windows along the camp side and create a bright, open feel in a tiny floor plan. More glass means more light, more views, and a stronger indoor-outdoor flow. It even sets up handy pass-through windows for cooking and serving.

Exterior specs

Key numbers stay friendly to midsize tow vehicles and crossovers. Always confirm your vehicle’s rating, hitch setup, and real-world cargo.

  • GVWR: 3,930 lbs.
  • Dry weight: 2,960 lbs.
  • Cargo capacity: 949 lbs.
  • Hitch weight: 430 lbs.
  • Axle rating: 3,500 lbs.

The trailer rides on 205/75R14 load range C Kenda tires with traditional leaf springs. Ground clearance is generous for beach access and uneven sites.

Everything needed for quick setup sits along the sides and the A-frame.

  • Sewer, city water, and power connections
  • Front A-frame with a single 20 lb. propane can
  • Spare tire mounted up front since the rear door occupies the back
  • A Fogatti tankless water heater, exterior furnace access, and a surprising amount of exterior storage stand out.

The trailer uses stick-and-tin construction, with wood framing, aluminum siding, and a steel frame. MORryde StepAbove® and a friction-hinge door add solid footing and smooth entry.

For such a small footprint, the Gulf Stream Ameri-Lite 16RD still gets real capacity and simple serviceability:

  • Fresh water: 35 gallons
  • Gray water: 33 gallons
  • Black water: 18 gallons
  • Furnace: 20,000 BTU
  • Propane: single bottle, 20 lbs.

Interior

At 16 ft. 3 in. overall (about 14 ft. of body), it still feels surprisingly open. A front full-size bed anchors the space, and the entire under-bed area is accessible from inside for easy storage.

Large windows wrap the camp side and rear, filling the cabin with light. Blackout pleated shades keep it dark when it is time to sleep.

The layout stacks sleeping without crowding the room.

  • Full-size bed for two
  • Sofa converts to a bunk for two
  • Drop-down upper bunk for one (also handy as storage)

The high bunk and sofa bed combo adds flexibility for families or guests while keeping seating comfortable for daily use.

The wet bath saves space and still offers decent elbow room for a tiny trailer.  The bath is space-saving, simple and easy to clean.

Kitchen and dining

Storage and prep space punch above the trailer’s size. A pantry with adjustable shelves sits by a drop-down counter extension. The large side window opens, and the screen can come out, which makes passing food to the outside cook easy.

Features include:

  • Standard-size microwave
  • Two-burner cooktop
  • Laminated countertop and plastic sink
  • TV mount location and roof A/C
  • Everchill 12V fridge with small freezer

Final take: tiny trailer, big payoff

The Ameri-Lite 16RD shows how smart layout choices can change everything. It sleeps five, feels open, and keeps weight low without skipping core features. If you are looking for a small rig that punches above its size? This one deserves a spot on the shortlist.

We owned a 2022 Amerlite. It was the most poorly constructed camper we’ve ever seen. Holes for wires and water lines appeared to be drilled with a hammer. Roof was not applied properly, resulting in multiple leaks. Frame outriggers were missing welds… I could go on and on. Couldn’t get rid of it fast enough.

Any other color other than gray? Just a depressing color. Something in turquoise? Choice of color for carpeting?

No Oven is only drawback for me.
