Hand grenade in an RV – dumb crooks tryouts

File this in the “dumb crooks” category. The area bomb squad got a call-out when Douglas County, Colorado, sheriff’s officers found a hand grenade in an RV. It might never have happened if those involved hadn’t put out “cop bait” on the RV.

Expired tabs lead to hand grenade in an RV

On patrol in the little county south of Denver, a sheriff’s deputy spotted a pickup pulling a travel trailer. The trailer’s tags were expired, so the deputy pulled the combination over. According to a release from the department, “The truck also had an expired temporary tag from 2023. Those are not uncommon, but once he [the deputy] contacted the driver, it all became obvious that something else was happening.”

While the agency doesn’t specify exactly what that something “obvious” was that tipped off the officer, a search of the truck and trailer got under way. “Multiple packages of suspected drugs and paraphernalia were found, along with a gun,” says the department’s Facebook page. “Unfortunately, these are also not uncommon, but finding a HAND GRENADE is.”

The bomb squad came. They saw. They conquered. The hand grenade in the RV was rendered safe. Brian Peters, 40, and Rubi Furrer, 50, both got a free trip to the lockup. Peters has been charged with drug possession and possession of a weapon; Furrer simply on the hook for drug possession. No word on whether a ticket was issued for the trailer’s expired tabs.

Thank you, Russ and Tina! Amazing story. I wonder if the story exhaustively listed the dumb things the crooks did or did not do? Seems like a pretty long list as is. I’ll take a wild guess that neither was the valedictorian of their high school graduating class. 😉 Thanks again and safe travels! 🙂

Probably got the “stupidest” award and most likely to “not succeed”.

meth pipes…ugh. I lost a nephew to meth. Nobody knows where he is or what happened to him. That was 20 years ago. So sad.

Very sorry, MattD. 🙁 My condolences to your family, given my presumption that his disappearance feels as though he died. 😯🙁😥🙏

Interesting. I do not get ads in the newsletter itself. But they are numerous when I follow any link to read the rest of a story. Oh well. 😉 Safe travels all y’all! 🙂

Just good police work. It shows the dangers officers face daily on “routine” traffic stops. Felons captured because of a traffic offense.
