“A hungry bear walks into a California kitchen…” This sounds like the beginning of a joke, but this really happened last Tuesday, June 4, 2024, in Sierra Madre, California. Around 5:30 p.m., Jason Wightman washed his dinner dishes when he suddenly realized he was not alone. A black bear had strolled through Wightman’s patio door, presumably searching for his own dinner.
Wightman immediately dashed out of the kitchen and ran out his back door. The bear also seemed momentarily surprised by the encounter.
Mr. Wightman reentered his home, scooped up his phone and began to video the bear. While recording, Wightman can be heard loudly shouting in an attempt to convince the bear to leave.
The bear ducked back outside the patio door, but hesitated. You can see the curious bear peruse the kitchen, perhaps hoping Wightman might change his mind and offer the big fellow a little snack. That didn’t happen, and the Sierra Madre resident won’t quickly forget his close encounter.

I’m not sure what I would do, but definitely I’d try not to panic. Hopefully I’ll never have to find out.

Thank you, Gail! 🙂 If a bear entered the RV, then we must have had only the screen door closed. As the bear spray is in a cabinet above the door, we’d be in a world of hurt. 😯🙁 If a bear entered our home, then a door must have been left open, which is pretty unlikely. Because our bear spray is 1/4 of a mile away in a cabinet above the RV entry door, we’d be in a world of hurt if we could not escape through the back door/back yard. Pretty hypothetical, especially a bear in our home, but interesting to consider. Thanks again and safe travels, Gail! 🙂
Knowing that most bear attacks are because of threats to their person or cubs, I would simply back off and try to leave the room. Then just wait until it decided to leave. Then never leave a door unlocked again. 😁
