RVers, if you’re heading to Florida, think again! Another hurricane is barreling toward the Sunshine State and meteorologists warn this will undoubtedly be a catastrophic storm.
Hurricane Milton intensified in the Gulf of Mexico yesterday, and the National Hurricane Center (NHC) warns that Florida will face a life-threatening storm by midweek. Currently, Milton has intensified into a powerful Category 5 hurricane as it tracks toward the eastern Florida Gulf Coast. This storm is predicted to affect a very wide swath through the state of Florida.
Milton’s path
Milton, which formed on Saturday, has been gaining strength as it crosses the warm waters in the Gulf. Winds on Monday exceeded Category 5 strength at 180 mph. Evacuation orders have been issued as forecasters warn of catastrophic storm surges and widespread flooding.
Areas damaged by Hurricane Helene still have significant debris that, if not removed, will act as projectiles when hit by Hurricane Milton.
Milton is predicted to make landfall in Florida as an extremely life-threatening hurricane on Wednesday.
What Florida residents should expect
Residents along the hurricane’s path (most of Florida) are urged to heed evacuation orders ahead of this catastrophic storm. Here’s what to expect as Hurricane Milton approaches:
- Intense winds and storm surge. Milton is forecast to bring damaging winds to the Florida Gulf Coast and inland, as well. This will cause extensive damage to homes, trees, and power lines. The storm surge is predicted to be as high as 15 feet and will cause significant flooding throughout the region.
- Heavy rainfall. Widespread heavy rainfall is anticipated throughout Florida. This could lead to flash flooding, especially in low-lying areas. It’s important for residents in flood-prone zones to keep a close eye on weather updates and evacuation advisories.
Hurricane and storm surge watches
The NHC urges residents to stay alert and pay attention to frequently updated hurricane and storm surge watches, particularly if they live in coastal or low-lying areas, as these watches will give a heads-up on what areas could face the greatest danger.
What else is brewing?
Hurricane Milton isn’t the only storm in the spotlight. The NHC is also keeping a close eye on two other named storms in the Atlantic. While Milton is the immediate concern for Florida, it’s essential to stay informed on any changes to these other systems, which could also pose threats in the coming days.
Prepare now
For now, Florida’s Gulf Coast residents should make necessary preparations for what will be a significant storm event. Stocking up on supplies, securing your property, and knowing your evacuation routes are crucial steps to take ahead of a potential major hurricane.
Stay informed
Keep an eye on updates from the National Hurricane Center and local officials. With the storm approaching, critical information will be issued frequently. Stay safe, and don’t wait until the last minute to prepare and evacuate for what will be a very dangerous situation by midweek.
