Listen to TV thru your smartphone with Tunity

By Chris Guld, Geeks on Tour

When we’re traveling during football season we enjoy finding a sports bar with multiple TVs so we can watch our home team play. It’s fun to soak up the energy of people cheering on their teams – especially when there’s not much to cheer about with your own. (Our team is the Dolphins, with 2 wins and 8 losses this year.) The problem is that even though the bar has our team’s game playing on one of the TVs, they only play the sound of the home team game. The TV with our game was muted.

My husband, Jim, went searching and discovered a mind-blowingly cool app. It’s called Tunity. It allows you to listen in to any muted TV. The Tunity app on your phone allows you to simply point your phone at the particular TV that is playing the game you want. Get the TV screen showing on the app in the space provided. The app scans that image and, combined with your GPS location, it determines what broadcast channel it is and syncs the sound to the TV. The sound comes out of your phone, even though the TV is muted. You can use earbuds on your phone then, and listen to the game loud and clear, without annoying anyone else.

You can even use it at home. When you need to be quiet for the comfort of others in the house, simply mute your TV and use Tunity to listen in on your phone. Just be aware that it only works on live, broadcast TV.

Tunity is free and is available for both Android and iOS.

Go Dolphins! … Hope springs eternal. 🙂

I tried this Android app at home. No hitches with the download. The app works as described. I wear Bluetooth enabled hearing aids. Bonus.
