A tragic crash has taken the lives of three members of a family of eight. The motorhome crash happened in Utah’s Grand County last Sunday, July 14. While both parents and the youngest member of the family are gone, today hopeful news emerged regarding one of the surviving children.
Lane crossover led to motorhome crash
Derick Hurst, 31, and his wife, Shandi, “Shay,” 28, were together in their Suburban with their six children. The family from Mancos, Colorado, had headed home after a softball tournament in Vernal, Utah. The Hurst Suburban was heading south on U.S. Highway 191 near milepost 151.
For an unknown reason, the family rig crossed into the northbound lane and crashed head-on into an oncoming Class A motorhome. According to police reports, the Suburban was “traveling at a high rate of speed.”

The impact left Derick, Shay, and their three-month old daughter, Skylar, dead at the scene. Jamie and Dean, two of their boys, were taken to a local hospital. Dean was later airlifted to Salt Lake City. He has multiple fractures and a concussion. Jamie is now out of the hospital. People are making donations to the family on GoFundMe.
Law enforcement has not identified two injured people in the motorhome. Responders took both of them to a hospital, but no other reports on their condition are available.
Utah troopers are still investigating what was behind the incident.

Why if the Chevy “crossed lanes” is the Motorhome in the wrong lane?
Wondered the same thing when I first saw it. But if you look at the skid marks, it appears the impact may have occurred on the motorhome’s lane and the weight and momentum of the motorhome pushed back on to the Chevy’s lane,

The RV occupants are “fortunate” in that they were above the point of impact. Hopefully some information will reveal the likely reason that the Chevy crossed the center line. Interesting, but it looks to me by the photo that the RV crossed over!
This is a terrible tragedy for both families. The photo doesn’t make much sense to me when reading the explanation for the cause. Plus I don’t see how an SUV could move a large Class A towing a pickup into the final resting positions depicted by the photo. My ex-boss’ wife crossed over double lines (fell asleep) approx. 15-20 years ago. The other driver tried avoiding her by crossing over the double lines themselves. Unfortunately, she woke up a split second before collision, and tried going back into her lane. Both vehicles collided. Luckily in that collision no one passed away.
This is a terrible accident to say the least! I can’t figure the picture out as to how this happened with what appears to be the MH in the wrong lane. Would like to see a drone shot of this one inluding the skid marks. Impact must have been been terrific to destroy the back of the Suburban…. wow! Sad there were deceased; surprised anyone could survive this one.
Also, note the windshield in the motorhome is gone – glad they were apparently wearing seat and shoulder belts or they would be part of the Suburban.
