Planning a fall getaway? These six U.S. national parks are must-visit destinations

As summer winds down and the air turns crisp, there’s no better time to explore the U.S. national parks than in the fall. With cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and vibrant foliage, autumn transforms these natural wonders into spectacular playgrounds for hikers, photographers, and nature lovers alike. Emily Hart, a solo traveler who has visited all 63 major national parks, highlights six top destinations she considers the best U.S. national parks in fall.

Best U.S. national parks in fall — The Smokies and Acadia lead the way

The Smokies are famous for their rich biodiversity, with more than 100 native tree species turning brilliant shades of red, gold, and orange each fall. Peak foliage varies by elevation, starting in higher elevations around late September and stretching to the valleys through early November. Scenic drives such as Newfound Gap Road and hikes like the Alum Cave Trail provide immersive experiences amid the autumn colors. Hart notes that early mornings can offer fog-filled valleys, creating perfect photo opportunities.

Acadia National Park (Maine)

Cadillac Mountain and Jordan Pond are standout spots for sunrise and sunset views, though visitors should be prepared for occasional crowds, especially on weekends. Autumn light adds a unique warmth to the park’s dramatic landscapes. Hart recommends exploring some of the lesser-known carriage roads for quieter hikes surrounded by colorful foliage.

But move a little to the west

Cuyahoga Valley National Park (Ohio)

Often overlooked, Cuyahoga Valley is a quieter destination where trails wind past waterfalls and forests aglow in fall colors. Brandywine Gorge Loop and the Towpath Trail allow visitors to enjoy peaceful hikes without the heavy traffic seen in more famous parks. Hart also suggests taking the historic Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad for a relaxed ride through the vibrant autumn scenery.

Rocky Mountain National Park (Colorado)

The Rockies are particularly striking in fall when golden aspens create shimmering contrasts against rugged peaks. Bear Lake is a prime location for soaking in the scenery, while other areas like Trail Ridge Road offer sweeping vistas of colorful valleys below. Wildlife, including elk and moose, is often more visible in September and October, adding to the park’s appeal.

From THE canyon to the mountains

Grand Canyon National Park (Arizona)

Popular viewpoints such as Mather Point and Desert View are more accessible, while hiking trails offer comfortable conditions for exploration. Hart suggests taking advantage of the crisp air and clear skies for early morning hikes or stargazing in the evenings.

Grand Teton National Park (Wyoming)

Best U.S. national parks in fallThe Tetons provide dramatic mountain backdrops paired with golden aspens and active wildlife during September and October. Hart emphasizes that the combination of vibrant foliage, wildlife activity, and clear skies makes fall an ideal season for both photography and outdoor adventure. She recommends hiking to hidden lakes like String Lake for reflection shots and peaceful autumn solitude.
