Planning an RV trip to San Francisco? Don’t park on the street!

If you’re planning a road trip to San Francisco in your RV, don’t count on street parking once you get there. On Tuesday, July 15, the city’s Board of Supervisors passed a new law that will make it illegal to park RVs or other oversized vehicles on public streets for more than two hours. The vote was 9–2 in favor of the measure. San Francisco RV parking restrictions could mean trouble for visiting RVers.

San Francisco RV parking restrictions aimed at homeless

The new rule is aimed mainly at curbing long-term vehicle dwellings. The city plans to spend $13 million over the next two years to help people currently living in RVs find housing. There’s also a permit system in the works, which would allow individuals in need to legally remain in their RVs for up to six months while they search for a place to live. A vehicle buyback program will also be offered to those ready to move out of their rigs.

Supporters say the policy balances compassion and public order, while critics argue it doesn’t do enough to truly address homelessness. District 7 Supervisor Myrna Melgar said the city has seen cases where families live in RVs they don’t even own—paying high “rent” to people who are profiting off the housing crisis.

Mayor Daniel Lurie backed the new law, saying it’s part of San Francisco’s broader effort to make the city safer and cleaner while offering real help to people in need.

Flowers in hair, but no parking there

Bottom line for RVers? If you’re heading into San Francisco, Scott McKenzie’s 1967 hit advised, “Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair.” But don’t expect to leave your rig parked somewhere on the curb. Look for designated RV parks or campgrounds outside the city and take public transit in. Otherwise, instead of meeting “some gentle people there,” you’re more apt to meet some people with ticket books.

Thank you for sharing the news of the new parking rules in San Francisco, Russ and Tina! Although, reminding me of “San Francisco” may be of greater importance, given how unlikely I am to RV thereabouts and how much I enjoy the song (https://youtu.be/j-447NaiBJs?feature=shared). Although the fashionable attire shown in the video also reminds me of how long ago 1967 was. 🤔😲 Have a great day and safe travels!
