Walking is just about the perfect exercise. Despite it being low-impact, it’s still considered a great aerobic exercise. It can improve high blood pressure and body mass index, and can even lower the risk of health complications such as diabetes and heart disease. Plus, it’s good for your bones and joints! And don’t even get us started on the mental health benefits of being outside in nature (but you, as RVers, already know this)!
How often do you go for a walk? And yes, a walk around the campground loop counts! Walking across the grocery store parking lot, however, does not.

Every day, sometimes twice, as the dog(s) and I need the exercise!
I don’t “go for walks.” As I approach the age of 75, exercise for me, is 12-1/2 miles on a bicycle 5 or 6 mornings every week, unless the weather is bad. IMO, it’s easier on the hips and knees. Living in Florida, “winter” doesn’t stop me, but rain does.
Usually 4 times a day. We (the furkids and I) usually walk about 5 miles a day, weather permitting.
Every night. I’m a sleepwalker! LOL
But seriously; not as much as I should. Prior to retirement two years ago my routine was 2-3 miles per day. Now I’m lucky if I do 2-3 miles per week. Its not that I’m inactive. I’m always busy doing projects, but its not the same as a brisk walk (physically and mentally).
Thanks for the reminder!
Having to use a walker or mobility scooter, the only walking I do is short distances in the house or in the parking lot to get into the store. Flat ground only for me.
The wife and I walk the dogs at least 3x a day.
We winter in a RV community & recently bought a golf cart. Until then we walked to activities, mail room, office etc. Now we deliberately have to say “let’s walk” or it’s too easy to ride that cart everywhere.
Every couple of days if the weather permits.
I walk for errands or activities of daily living, ie going to the dumpster, laundry room, club house, etc, but not for exercise. I gave up on walking for exercise due to some unexplained muscular knee pain and the time involved in getting enough steps (recommended 10,000). Instead I use my medical insurance benefit, Renew Active/Silver Sneakers to go to gyms, even while on the road. It is more efficient; 30 minutes/day in the gym and I’ve met the recommended amount of exercise. My fav is the elliptical which is easy on the joints. At 69, and 2 hip replacements, I’m in the best shape of my life.
I will walk as long as it takes to get to a fishing hole, or somewhere else important, but as far as walking just to walk? Never.
After running and racing for decades, arthritis in my knees ended that. I switched to walking for exercise and my orthopaedist said find other ways to exercise until your knee gets replaced. So, I walk with DW and her dog (aka, the monster for his proclivity to destroy all he can get into his mouth), usually daily. I also walk a lot during spring, summer, and fall while string trimming and blowing grass clippings or leaves.
What is a DW?? Know my Not Legal Wife/Partner tells me all to frequently how to live my Life!!! Seems I have a Listening Problem!!
But “Smart” enough to call her the, “Princess” !! As she think she from Royalty!!
Just Askin’.
Hey Bill Bamber, sorry. I thought it was a standard abbreviation. Anyway DW is “dear wife.”
Hi, Neal. I was going to reply to Bill, but then I got the feeling from the content of his comment that he was being facetious. Maybe I was wrong.🤔 Have a good afternoon/evening. 😀 –Diane
I didn’t know, Diane, so I played it straight. 🙂 Good night and thank you! 🙂
👍 Speaking of walking, I just got back from my daily walk at the local high school track. It was so dark and dreary and wet, it felt like walking through a very wet cloud. Slightly more than what I would call a “torrential mist” but less than a sprinkle, and not enough to use my umbrella. Weird. But now I can thaw out and dry out with a clear conscience. Have a good night, Neal. 😀 –Diane
My dogs and I hit the woods and fields daily, year around. Two to four miles is typical.
I walk a mile twice a day to off-set the effects of cancer fighting medicine. Well, maybe not when its 10F outside. Heading to AZ soon as the weather breaks for a couple days.
Good luck with your cancer treatments, George!👍 We hope you have a happy and healthy, i.e., cancer-free, 2024.🤗 –Diane at RVtravel.com
Yikes! Very sorry, GeorgeB. 🙁 🙏 I pray that all goes well for you! 🙂
We have a golden retriever. Haven’t yet stayed at a campground with a large fenced site (and don’t want to). ’nuff sed
Home gym with treadmill, elliptical, and pilates. Gets used almost everyday.
If you have a dog and no fenced yard, then you should probably be walking at least twice a day, at least that has been our experience.
I make four trips around my yard each evening after supper (1.25 acre), weather permitting. In the winter there is usually way too much snow for the yard walk – however, snow shoveling a 200′ circle driveway usually takes the place of a walk. Also, living in bi-level home there are plenty of steps and the microwave and coffee are upstairs. My office and shop are downstairs!
1/2-hour 3x daily with dog. Fresh air is good for both of us. I use treadmill and recumbent bike also.
Was riding my bike, but now just walking 3-4 times a week for a bit over 3 miles at a time. Just over an hour or so
When camping we walk and ride bikes every day. At home not so much.
My wife and I walk two miles every day except for Sunday’s. Some days we will walk a lot more, depending on how my knees feel. I will do a lot more walking when we’re camping but usually right before dawn. I’m an early riser but my wife isn’t.
Too much back injury for walks. Dance four hours per week, however.
I get my “steps” doing Rally & Agility with our dogs’
I walked almost constantly up through my 60s and then the warranty ran out. And like on RVs, I found the extended warranty to be worthless. And like RVs, I find locating parts for an older model is close to impossible. I had the frame refurbished, but that just bought a new BMW for the mechanic – or maybe Lexus – they all look alike.
