Not all RVs come with ladders leading up to the roof, so if you have one, consider yourself lucky! It makes things easier when you have one that’s permanently attached (plus it is space-saving!).
But here’s the real question: Do you actually use it? Some of you climb up there regularly to check seals, clean off leaves, or sweep away pine needles after a windy night. Others look at that ladder and think, “Nope… not today,” and leave the roof inspections to the pros.
And even if you feel confident, the conditions matter—a wet roof, soft spots, or a gusty day can turn a simple climb into something risky. Plenty of RVers prefer using a sturdy step ladder instead, keeping both feet planted firmly on the ground as much as possible.
But, as always, even if your RV does have a ladder to your roof, it doesn’t mean it’s safe to walk or spend time up there! Always be cautious.
And if you’re wondering about mounting anything to your RV’s ladder, here’s information about mounting a flagpole to it, and here’s some info about mounting a backup camera on it.
On your current RV, is there a permanent ladder attached that leads up to the roof? Please tell us in the poll below. Thanks!

Yes, but we added it
Our toy hauler we’re in now but not our small cargo camper or destination trailer.
Yes. It is intended to support both a HF antenna and a VHF/UFH antenna.
Chasing RF.
oh, by the way, RV’s make perfect emergency communication vehicles.
Only 25 hurricanes so far.
Yes, and I HOPE it’s permanent!😱
No. Our last two have not and I miss it. I used to always go up on the roof before pulling in slides to sweep off the toppers and clear any branches, nuts, etc. that fell on the roof. Not anymore. I do carry a telescoping ladder, but it’s heavy and I can’t say I like it. It’s there for emergency use only.
Yes, use it every time to put our US Flag at the top 🇺🇸👍🏻
I’ve had both and I prefer my telescoping ladder. It’s much more sturdy, and safer as well. I can step from the ladder onto the roof…no more getting on hands and knees then standing up. Plus, a lot of rear mounted ladders have a lower weight rating compared to my telescoping ladder. Another plus is that I can use it around the house for things like hanging Christmas lights.
No. And after using one to help a friend, don’t want one. Only good use as far as I am concerned is as an anchor point for accessories. I have 12 foot telescoping ladder that fits in a bay. It only weighs 20 pounds and supports 300. Having a ladder at an angle is far safer than a vertical climb.
Current Dutch Star doesn’t have one – the configuration of the roof edge fairings and the engine access make it difficult. When we had one I used it regularly for inspection and repairs.
Our class A had a ladder but when the owner before us tried to sell it on consignment with Camping World, the ladder got bent beyond repair. It was removed before we bought it.
I have one but do not use it. It is only one more way for place leak.
