How to choose a cool campsite in the hot summer

By Nanci Dixon
Whew! It seems that the last several campgrounds my husband and I have stayed at have been closer to solar ovens than cool, shady campsites. It has been so blistering hot under the sun that we haven’t even bothered taking the chairs out. If you think there’s no way to get cool in hot weather, think again. I’ll show you a quick, easy way to make sure your RV stays cool at the next campsite.

Ask Dave
Shouldn’t my solar panel keep RV’s battery charged during storage?

Dear Dave,
The factory-installed solar panel charges the RV battery when switched on. When parked for a few weeks in the driveway, shouldn’t the panel keep the battery charged, which, in turn, keeps the refrigerator (which is battery operated) running? —Ted, Grand Design Transcend 200MK

RV tech reveals the 3 most common lies RV salesmen tell

By Cheri Sicard
In the video below, certified RV tech Jacob Rigor of Rigor RV Repair talks about three lies RV salesmen tell potential RV buyers.

Now, this is not to say that RV salespeople do not tell other lies, too. They definitely do. But Jacob says these three are the most common and any time you hear them you should investigate further.

Quick tip
Avoid a dead end: Use Google Maps

When looking for a parking lot to pull into, open Google Maps. Although it is probably not a current view, you will be able to see if the area behind the building is a full pull-through or a dead end. Thanks for the tip, Christine D.!

This made us smile. It’s something we all do, and it’s the best part about being an RVer, isn’t it?

And the survey says…

We’ve polled RVtravel.com readers more than 2,500 times in recent years. Here are a few things we’ve learned about them:

• 20 percent often buy souvenir magnets for their fridge on trips.
• 38 percent have encountered a bear at least once while hiking.
• 16 percent consider themselves to be an avid birdwatcher.

Recent poll: Do you run your RV’s air conditioner when away from your rig?

Recipe of the day
Salmon Fillet With Herb Pesto

by Marian Arbour from Newcastle, ON

The instructions and cooking time for this salmon are perfect. The final result is tender and juicy. We loved the flavor grilling adds to the salmon, but this could easily be baked in the oven. On top is a pesto that’s sweet and tangy. We opted to use pine nuts for the pesto but walnuts would be great too. You can use this pesto with any fish, chicken, or meat.

Trivia

The first McDonald’s drive-through was inspired by the military in 1975. McDonald’s had a base near one of the restaurants but the soldiers were not allowed to leave the cars while wearing fatigues. And that spells “opportunity.”

Readers’ pet of the day

“Tucker (Golden/Brittany Spaniel cross) loved to go camping with us. We boondock mostly so he and our other dogs could roam. We lost him in February of this year and this summer is going to be a very different camping experience. This picture was his last camping trip from last summer. He was 15 but still ran around like a puppy. He was the best boy ever. We sure miss him.” —Kathy Huffman

Send us a photo of your pet with a short description. We publish one each weekday in RV Daily Tips and in our Sunday RV Travel newsletter. No blurry photos, please! Please do not submit your photo more than once. Thanks!

Pets so enrich our lives. Especially after the kids are grown, and on their own.
We have a senior poodle, who’s expiration date is near. Not looking forward to that day.

Good idea about Google maps..BUT, it’s hard to do when you are at the driveway of a parking lot, there’s a line of cars behind you, and all their horns are honking…
