Today’s thought

“Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.” —Anthony Bourdain

Video: Motorhome ripped to pieces trying to pass under low bridge

It gets old showing you videos of RVs that have had devastating encounters with low bridges. But we will keep showing them to help remind you to pay close attention to bridges and tunnels along your route that will rip a rig apart should it try to pass through. Ouch!

Quick tip
A simple reminder which just may save your RV roof

Don’t bang your [RV’s] head: Make an easy-to-read note and put it on your dashboard or sun visor showing your RV height in feet and inches—and in metric, too, if you travel out of the country. It could save your TV antenna, air conditioner—even your roof. Thanks to George B. for the tip.

Website of the day

National Geographic
When was the last time you explored the National Geographic website? Remember all those hours spent reading the magazine years ago? Well, this is almost as good.

And the survey says…

We’ve polled RVtravel.com readers close to 5,000 times in recent years. Here are a few things we’ve learned about them:

• It’s a tie! 50 percent believe marijuana should be legalized nationally for recreational use while the other 50 percent believe it should not be legalized.
• When asked what their favorite part of the U.S. is, the highest number of voters, 31 percent, say the West. The second highest percentage voted the Southeast and the third highest percentage voted the West Coast.
• If offered the choice at breakfast between hashbrowns or pancakes, 73 percent would always or most often choose hashbrowns over pancakes.

Trivia

In 1885, the Statue of Liberty almost didn’t make it to the U.S. because America ran out of money to build its pedestal. To raise funds, newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer used his paper, The New York World, to launch a crowdfunding campaign. More than 120,000 people donated, most contributing less than a dollar. Their collective effort made it possible for Lady Liberty to finally stand tall in New York Harbor!

Yes, I had one of those cameras! It was called “The Swinger”!! Still have a few of the pictures left. Most of the “instant print” pictures have dried out and cracked.

The RV/bridge video and the Quick Tip reminded me to be aware of the height of ours and not just the width while I’m driving. Ours is 10’11” high. Now if they would just mark or trim the limbs in some campgrounds. It would help if I take the big noisy AC off the roof and get a mini-split.

I measured my motor home and I made a label up with my label maker of the height and added six extra inches in case the road is rough under the bridge and put the label next to the speedometer.

Gabby is a heat-seeker!
Even in warmer climates I think heat can soothe old dog joints. I know it does mine. Thanks for sharing.

I find todays question a little sad because a lot of people live alone and have no family and no friends and do the holidays alone. I live alone and my family is gone. But I know someone who will also spend it alone and we are going out for chinese because turkey dinner and thanksgiving is totally over rated. IMO not yours

If you do not know the height of your rig and are unable to read warning signs anymore, turn the keys in and sell the wheels. It may keep you from killing someone else other than yourself..

I wish we had information on the driver of the Rv vs bridge video. Would be interesting to know the other side of the story…. distraction, cell phone, GPS, passenger, heart attack. I find it hard to believe anyone with this size MH doesn’t know the height-width details. Perhaps the driver had rented or borrowed the unit. My neighbor borrowed a friends class C and promptly took off AC on the street leaving Assinaboine (Sp) Park in Winnipeg. (It was the 1st time he had driven an RV!).
