RVers beware: The ‘Starlink chip’ is a Facebook scam

If you’re an RV traveler dreaming of internet anywhere, you might have seen Facebook ads promising a “Starlink chip” SIM card for just $14.90 a month. It sounds perfect for boondocking, tailgating, or escaping to remote campgrounds—but it’s really the Starlink chip scam.

Musk’s face featured in Starlink chip scam

Starlink chip scamThe ads often feature AI-generated images of SpaceX CEO Elon Musk holding a tiny chip, claiming it lets your phone stay connected anywhere in the world. The reality? SpaceX’s cellular Starlink system can only handle basic texting in dead zones, and only through official partner carriers like T-Mobile in certain world regions. There’s no universal Starlink SIM card you can buy online.

Clicking the ad takes you to a fake Starlink website. The site asks you to complete a survey about your current phone service while it hypes the “chip” and warns that supplies are almost gone. By the end, you’re funneled into a Shopify checkout page to pay for something that doesn’t exist. No chip, no service, no connection.

Anti-scam advice

For RVers, this is a big deal. A scam not only costs you money but also forces you to scramble for real connectivity when you’re off-grid. Stick with verified Starlink hardware or official cellular partners, and always confirm any offer directly through SpaceX or T-Mobile.

A little caution goes a long way. If it sounds too good to be true—like cheap, worldwide Starlink coverage—it probably is. Don’t let flashy social media ads take you in. Verify before you buy, and keep your connection—and your money—safe while enjoying the open road.

Thank you for the warning, Russ and Tina! We have seen a lot of Starlink users over the last 2 1/2 months. We also have been in quite a few campgrounds where Starlink is the only way to stay connected. While it doesn’t make sense for us, it apparently does for many others. Sadly, that may make folks all the more susceptible to this scam, making this article all the more important. Have a great day and safe travels!
