Free beta trial available now
T-Mobile is offering a free beta trial of its Starlink-powered satellite messaging service. The trial began on Monday, February 9, 2025. This trial is open to all U.S. users, including those who are not T-Mobile customers. During the beta phase, the service supports text messaging, with plans to introduce limited multimedia and app support by July.
After the free trial period, T-Mobile users can subscribe for $15 per month, while non-T-Mobile users will be charged $20 per line. Notably, users with T-Mobile’s Go5G Next plan will receive the service at no additional cost.
How it works
The service utilizes specially configured Starlink satellites equipped with Direct-to-Cell capabilities. These satellites function like cell towers in space, connecting your phone in areas where terrestrial networks are unavailable. As the ad says, “If you can see the sky, you’re connected.”
When your device moves out of traditional coverage, it automatically switches to the T-Mobile Starlink network, ensuring continuous connectivity without any manual intervention. This seamless integration works on most smartphones from the past four years, requiring no additional hardware or applications.

While the current beta focuses on text messaging, T-Mobile plans to expand the service to include voice calls and data capabilities in the future. I signed up for the beta testing, but it hasn’t been activated yet. Considering we boondock 99% of the time and never stay in an RV resort, we think it will be a good fit. Plus, we are always out hiking in the back country, where there is no cell service of any kind.
