Semitruck ‘can opener’ slices open a Class A which sideswiped it – Video

It looks like a scene from a B-grade horror flick. Call it, “Semitruck ‘can opener’ slices open a Class A which sideswiped it.” We don’t know when the accident occurred, but the video was published earlier this month.

Sideswipe like a “can opener” from a semitruck slices open Class A

It’s just a short video, but it demonstrates why you don’t want to get too close to the side of an 18-wheeler. Just one voiceover: “If you ever want to see what the inside of your motorhome looks like…”

Thanks. We’ll pass on it and stick to soup.

The explanation on the Roman with the Richeys YouTube channel is: “A vehicle intentionally stopped at a green light. The motorhome driver tried to avoid it and sideswiped a truck hauling large equipment. The vehicle that caused the accident took off.”

“A vehicle intentionally stopped at a green light. The motorhome driver tried to avoid it and sideswiped a truck hauling large equipment. The vehicle that caused the accident took off.”

In this case, the vehicle causing the accident was the motorhome. If they couldn’t stop for the vehicle that stopped ahead of them (unless it just swerved in front of them and slammed on the brakes) then they are at fault for following to closely. In this case, rather than rear ending the car stopped at the green light, they swerved and hit the semi.

The headline “sideswipe FROM a semi truck” makes it sound like the semi’s fault. Headline should have been “Inattentive Motorhome Driver Kills Own RV!”

Thanks, Mikal. I updated the title, slightly. It has gone through several versions due to updates in the content. Hopefully, this one is accurate enough. Have a good evening. 😀 –Diane

Yeah, I agree. Still feel bad for RV folks but by the sound of it, a little more caution on city streets may have helped. I’m guessing the RV driver saw the green light and anticipated the stopped car, with a driver texting or online shopping, would have accelerated from the green with room to spare….

OUCH ! That’s a pretty scary looking outcome from the accident.

Thank you, Russ and Tina! 🙂 My goodness! 😯 How awful for both parties! 🙂 I guess they repaired the sideswiped RV then, true? Thank you for sharing! Safe travels! 🙂

Dash Camera needed here. Let the lawyers fight it out. RVs don’t maneuver rapidly.
Yes, every vehicle we own has a dash camera.

Same here. Too many “case hunters ” out there.

So what part of the semi was “the can-opener”? In my mind I was picturing those spiky-looking lug nut covers. I don’t think they look the least bit attractive, and I could only imagine how destructive they’d be to a smaller vehicle coming in contact with them. I hope they’re just hollow covers like the fake chrome lug nut covers on our motor home – otherwise they could be a potential liability claim enhancement after a collision.

The semi was hauling large equipment.

The driver of the RV was clearly the one at fault. He should have been in control of his vehicle even when there is a stopped vehicle at a green light. His choice to swerve and totally destroy his Class A coach was obviously not a good choice. For those distracted drivers who like to PARK at a green light, I use my twin air horns and BLAST them until they it gets their attention to raise their heads out of their phones before they have a Class A rammed up their you know what..
