A storm has closed Devils Tower National Monument in Wyoming. A brief announcement on the park webpage reads, “The park is closed Wednesday, August 21st due to storm damage. Park conditions will be reevaluated periodically during the day on Wednesday.”
Devils Tower inundated with mudslide, fallen trees
A fierce storm whipped across the iconic Wyoming landmark on Monday night. Rangers worked into the night to help move visitors to safety. On Tuesday the park was officially closed, and officials told local media they had no idea how long it would take to reopen.
The storm left behind fallen trees, a mudslide large enough to close roads, and vast amounts of fallen leaves that made other roads slick enough to be treacherous. Both the visitor center and the historic Ranger’s Office took minor damage when hit by falling trees. On Tuesday, rangers were inspecting other trees for fall danger, and checking out trails for other hazards.
