The pros and cons of applying FlexArmor to your RV’s roof

In this video, we take you inside our repair shop to inspect a FlexArmor roof. While we don’t install FlexArmor at our shop, we see these roofs regularly. We believe it’s important for RV owners to understand both the benefits and potential concerns before deciding if this upgrade is right for their RV.

What is FlexArmor?

FlexArmor is a type of permanent, spray-on roof coating designed to provide enhanced protection against leaks, UV damage, and other wear and tear common with RV roofs. The product is marketed as a more durable, long-lasting alternative to traditional RV roof sealants or coatings.

The benefits of FlexArmor

1. Superior protection against leaks

One of the biggest selling points of FlexArmor is its ability to create a seamless, waterproof barrier across your entire roof. This eliminates the risk of leaks, a common problem for RV owners, especially in older models.

2. Durability and longevity

FlexArmor is designed to be far more durable than traditional roof sealants. It’s made from a tough, elastomeric material that resists cracking, peeling, and UV damage. Therefore, it can extend the lifespan of your roof and save you from constant maintenance.

3. Easier maintenance

Unlike traditional roofing materials that need regular resealing and inspection, FlexArmor is marketed as a “once-and-done” solution. The product claims to require little to no maintenance once applied, which is a major appeal for RV owners who want a hassle-free experience.

4. Environmentally resistant

FlexArmor is resistant to a variety of environmental challenges, including extreme temperatures, UV rays, and harsh weather conditions. This makes it a great option for RVers who travel through varying climates or rough conditions.

Concerns about FlexArmor roof application

1. The application process

The application of FlexArmor requires specialized equipment and skilled technicians. It’s not a DIY project, and improper application could lead to uneven coverage or failure of the material. Because the product needs to be applied uniformly and correctly, it’s important to choose an experienced professional to do the job, which can add to the overall cost.

2. Potential for trapping moisture

One of the concerns we have with FlexArmor is that the spray-on coating might trap moisture beneath it. If there’s any existing water damage or moisture in the roof structure, applying the coating could seal it in, leading to mold or rot over time. This is why it’s crucial to do a thorough inspection and ensure the roof is completely dry and structurally sound before applying the coating.

3. Limited repair options

If the FlexArmor roof becomes damaged or starts to peel (due to improper application, for example), it’s difficult to repair. Unlike traditional roofing materials that can be patched or resealed, FlexArmor typically requires full re-coating if there’s a problem, which can be a costly and time-consuming process.

4. Permanent nature

While FlexArmor is marketed as a permanent solution, this can be a double-edged sword. Once it’s applied, it can be challenging to remove or replace if you want to change your RV’s roof system in the future. If you’re the type of person who likes to upgrade or modify your RV over time, FlexArmor may not be the most flexible option.

5. High upfront cost

The cost of applying FlexArmor can be significantly higher than traditional roof sealing methods. While it may save you money in the long run due to reduced maintenance, the initial investment can be a deterrent for many RV owners.

What to consider before investing in FlexArmor

1. The condition of your roof

Ensure that your RV’s roof is in good condition before applying FlexArmor. If there are already issues like leaks or significant wear, it’s essential to address these first, or you risk trapping problems under the coating.

2. The application process and costs

Do your research on certified professionals who are trained to apply FlexArmor. Ask about the cost of the application and whether it includes a warranty or follow-up inspections. Consider whether the high upfront cost makes sense for your specific needs.

3. Future maintenance needs

Although FlexArmor reduces the need for frequent maintenance, it’s still important to regularly inspect the roof for any potential damage or signs of wear. Be mindful of the permanent nature of the product and consider whether it aligns with your long-term RV goals.

4. Your travel conditions

If you frequently travel in harsh environments, FlexArmor’s environmental resistance could be a great benefit. However, if you mostly stay in temperate climates, you might find that a more affordable, traditional roof solution works just as well.

Conclusion

While FlexArmor offers some clear benefits, especially when it comes to sealing leaks and providing long-term durability, it’s not without its drawbacks. As an RV repair shop owner and former technician, I advise potential buyers to carefully weigh the pros and cons, ensuring the roof is in good condition before application and considering the long-term implications of a permanent coating.

I had the RVFlexArmor roof process done on my 2017 625SL Travel Lite truck camper over 5 years ago and I couldn’t be happier. The authorized dealer in Bates city Missouri was fantastic. They addressed any concerns about moisture in the roof by a complete and through inspection and if needed, they replace any bad wood. (I didn’t have any because I had this done within 2 years of purchasing the new camper) The lifetime, fully transferable, written, NO Leak Guarantee is a real seller for me and I believe having this product on the roof will help me sell my RV for a better price than without it when the time comes.

We have had an RV Armor brand roof application since 2019. They fully inspected the roof and did a a leak repair where the TV cable came into the RV. They removed the solar panels and in motion Sat dish before the installation. They were VERY professional and gave a complete description of the process before starting. Pictures before and after were provided as well. The lifetime transferable warranty give us peace of mind. Very happy with them.

Besides all the usual stuff on our TT roof, we have five solar panels. I have always wondered how they would put one of these roof coverings on our trailer with this stuff.

They remove the solar panels at an additional cost. We had ours done with six solar panels.

Dustin: Referencing the skylite replacement problem with the way this coating was applied…. I wonder if, in event it had to be replaced, could the old one be cut out around the roof seams and then the seams recoated with Dicor roof sealant or similar? I researched several coating products for my 34′ Class A and settled on the Dicor for Fiberglass as it is a do-it-yourself product. That was 5-7 years ago and I am extremely happy with it! (I don’t have the screw covers along the edge so only applied the coating to the gutter rail).

Having a wind damaged roof 34 ft. MH,
Requested a est. from a Winnebago dealer in Las Vegas, the quote was $ 12-15 thousand,
Flex armor in Prescott AZ was $ 8 thousand, including repairs.
With their lifetime transferable, the choice was easy…

Thank you, Dustin! Interesting. We’ll stick with our fiberglass roof and the associated maintenance. Happy new year and safe travels! 🙂
