The Cherokee National Forest has announced the temporary closure of the Little Stony Dispersed Camping Area on Watauga Lake, TN, effective August 30. This disappointing news comes just as the Labor Day holiday weekend is about to begin.
Officials cite public health and safety concerns as reasons for the closure. This decision comes after a significant accumulation of trash left by visitors. The trash has attracted bears to the area, posing an additional risk to campers.
Public safety
According to a statement from the Watauga Ranger District, the closure will remain in effect until forestry officials can thoroughly clean the site and remove hazardous debris. During this period, signs will be posted, and the area will be regularly patrolled to ensure public safety.
Disappointment
Terence Rose, District Ranger for the Watauga Ranger District, expressed disappointment over the situation. He said, “This behavior contradicts our eastern Tennessee values and poses a danger to both humans and wildlife. Unfortunately, the careless actions of a few individuals can negatively impact everyone. We urge visitors to be mindful of their surroundings and take responsibility for cleaning up after themselves.”
Leave no trace
The Forest Service emphasized the importance of adhering to the “Leave No Trace” principles. These principles encourage visitors to dispose of waste properly, respect other campers, and minimize their impact on the natural environment.
Not just ordinary trash
Forestry officials discovered dangerous and hazardous objects among the trash at Little Stony Dispersed Camping Area. This necessitates the area’s complete closure to allow a thorough cleanup before the camping area can safely reopen. Campers and visitors are reminded to follow responsible practices to protect the environment and ensure a safe experience for all.

Thank you, Gail! 🙂 Very sad. 🙁 The District Ranger must not be from Tennessee, given that he said “eastern Tennessee values.” The state flag has three stars, recognizing the legal existence of three grand divisions of the state: East, Middle, and West. A Tennessean would have said ” East Tennessee values,” or simply “Tennessee values.” Oh well. I’m sure he’s been told already. Thanks again, have a great weekend, safe travels, and safe stays! 🙂
If he hasn’t been told yet, I’m sure you’ve set him straight Neal !😀
Wow, talk about cause and effect…or what you do, is what you get…
