Free South Carolina National Forest camping!

By Cheri Sicard

In the video above we join Lou and Melody from Living Our Dream Now (one of the winners of our 2024 RV video awards) for a visit to a terrific free South Carolina camping spot, the Honey Hill Recreation Area in the Francis Marion National Forest.

Gaining access to this amazing, scenic, free National Forest camping area is easy. In the video, Lou and Melody use their dash cam to take you along as they drive into the park.

Once they get into the park, we go on a walking tour. This is smart, especially if you have a big rig, as you never know what to expect at some of these campgrounds. This one was definitely big-rig-friendly with a lot of ENORMOUS campsites, so no worries this time.

The eight numbered campsites have picnic tables and campfire rings, and there are vault toilets on site. However, note that Lou found no potable water at the camp.

The wooded campsites are nicely shaded, which presents a challenge for Starlink users. But they are otherwise beautiful and shaded from the hot sun.

Campsites in the free South Carolina National Forest camping area are also nicely spread apart, so you will not feel like you are camping in your neighbor’s backyard.

Yes, you are camping off-grid, but with the price of campgrounds these days, not to mention overcrowding, it makes sense to outfit yourself for a least a few days of off-grid camping. Not to mention, you are never going to find HUGE semi-private campsites like these in commercial campgrounds.

If you’re interested in more National Forest camping, this is the guide to have.

And every SE state also has Army COE cgs. with hookups or dry camping at very reasonable prices, especially with the Interagency Lifetime Senior Pass. Some of those who continually complain about exorbitant East Coast RV park prices should try out some of those lakeside, shaded, well-maintained, inexpensive public options!

Thank you Cheri! 🙂 Great to know. Should we ever add lithium and solar, then we’ll head there. In the meantime our generator might bother any neighbors we might have. 🤔 Thanks again and safe travels! 🙂
