7 tips to surviving a family RV trip

By Cheri Sicard

The video above from RV Lifestyle, one of the winners of our 2024 RV video awards, discusses practical strategies to help everyone survive and thrive on a family RV trip.

Our hosts, Mike and Jennifer, say that not every family RV trip will be Instagram-perfect. But here are some strategies to implement to make it as good as it gets!

#1 Comfort is key: Mike says that nothing makes people grumpier than being uncomfortable. You can be proactive and put some effort before leaving on your family RV trip to make sure everyone has what they need to be comfortable in the RV and on the road.

#2 Take turns making decisions: Jennifer says that on an RV trip, decision-making fatigue is real, and making too many (all) the decisions can be exhausting. The advice? Take turns and even let the little kids play a hand in some of the trip’s choices.

#3 Schedule in some “me” time: While family time together is important, it’s equally important for everyone in the group to have their own “me” time. Our hosts say that by doing some “me” time, your family time will be even better!

#4 Leave room for serendipity: While it’s good to have a plan, some of the best RV moments happen when you stumble across unexpected gems while on the road. Don’t have a plan that’s so rigid you can’t take advantage of these amazing serendipitous moments.

#5 Be ready with games, crafts, and activities: Bring along a selection of your family’s favorite games, puzzles, and crafts. Rainy days do happen and these will help everyone stay amused while cooped up inside in a small space.

#6 Be ready with campfire stories: No family camping trip is complete without sitting around the campfire. Encourage each family member to come up with their own stories to share with the group.

#7 Encourage journaling: Journaling memorializes memories. Encourage everyone in the family to journal and keep their special memories of the trip forever.

Thank you, Cheri! There are some great hints here. Thank you for finding and sharing the video. Although our number of small ones is confined to dog #3, there are some good ideas here for us, too. Thanks again, and safe travels! 🙂
